See @croadcore at @pensacolazinefest! Cristy Road Carrera is an illustrator, graphic novelist, and punk musician whose work explores Cuban American identity, feminism, and social justice.

"The Punk-Zine-to-Art-Revolution Pipeline" -- Thurs 10/29, 5-6pm presented by Cristy Road Carrera at Voices of Pensacola

When all outlets of expression felt censored and contrived, zines were a catalyst for self-expression; their power was determined by whoever created one. Cristy Road Carrera is a Cuban American artist and writer whose career began in 1995 when she started a fanzine. Cristy’s work in zines led to illustrated novels, commissioned illustrations, and the Next World Tarot deck. This talk includes a visual slideshow lecture chronicling over 30 years of turning zines into artistic legacy.

Writers of the revolution,
Rage is in the air.
It’s mixed in with the flames and smoke.
They bomb schools but not data centers. They deport immigrants and give corporations cash in hand.
Our paychecks last 2 days instead of two weeks. The grocery bills are so high we can barely afford to eat.
Healthcare is a business that needs us sick and in debt forever. And violent assaults happen on our college campuses, and the powers that be protect the piss-ass perpetrators.
Perpetrators who go on to become presidents.
We march. We protest. And writers must write.
So let’s write, rage and release together.

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN 🥳

Goodbye, Sweet Chippy 🩷 My sister said goodbye to her sweet girl of 15 years a few weeks ago and I’m going to miss her so much. She was always such a beautiful and mystical spirit. I’ll love you forever, Chip Chip!

I live in 2 places. Just like the fancy authors who "divide their time between Paris and Williamsburg," but different. Anyhoo thanks to the wonder that is @roskincorey,I get to do some lit events in the desert, too. Come on down Sunday October 4 to hear me talk with @croadcore at the #palmspringsculturalcenter. Guaranteed good time, and it's practically temperate there these days.

@croadcore is one of hundreds of artists who have opposed AI facial recognition surveillance by signing our pledge to boycott venues that are using this dangerous, invasive tech.

We are honored Cristy could join us last Friday as we joined privacy advocates and other New Yorker’s rallying in front of Madison Square Garden, a venue that has repeatedly come under fire for using this tech on patrons and against its enemies.

Cristy calls back to MSG's history as a grounding for what venues are supposed to be for artists and fans- a space for the collective- for artists and fans to- not for the benefit of corporate greed and bolstering state surveillance.

Thankfully MSG is one of a small handful of venues using AI facial recognition surveillance tech across the country, and those that have used it, like the three Castro bars in San Francisco that were exposed for it, quickly bucked under pressure from our ban facial recognition campaign.

We need to keep the pressure on corporations and cities to prioritize patron safety and ban facial recognition.

Go to BanTheScan.org to learn more about how NYC is working to do this.
