The Paddock Cluster Housing Recognised in the 2026 Australian Good Design Awards

The Paddock Cluster Housing has been recognised in the 2026 Australian Good Design Awards, Australia’s longest-running international design awards, for excellence in design, innovation and impact.

This year’s Awards are presented under the theme Design that Leads - celebrating the critical role of design in navigating complexity, driving innovation and creating positive change.

At a time of unprecedented social, environmental and technological change, this year’s theme recognises that good design is more than an outcome, it is a powerful way of thinking, imagining and acting. It challenges us to question what is, envision what could be and design better products, services, places and systems for people and planet.

Among this year’s Award Winners is The Paddock Cluster Housing, which received a prestigious 2026 Australian Good Design Award Gold Winner in the Built Environment Architectural Design category.

Project Details and Jury Comments:

Project: The Paddock Cluster Housing
Designed in: Australia
Designed by:
CROSBY Architects
Emergent Studios - Landscape
Vivid Civil - Civil & Structural
Biourban Ecological Analysis
Alternative Technologies Association
Commissioned by:
Fumina Projects

JURY COMMENTS:
“The Jury commends The Paddock Cluster Housing as an exceptional model for regenerative residential design that redefines medium-density living through collective governance, ecological restoration and shared resource infrastructure. The project demonstrates remarkable integration of architecture, landscape and community systems, achieving 67 persons per hectare density with only 11% site coverage while becoming a net exporter of electricity and dedicating 35% of the site to food production. The Jury recognises this as a highly ambitious development that establishes a compelling benchmark for socially and environmentally resilient housing futures, providing critical mass for combined systems and the ability to share goods and services at sufficient scale. It serves as a valuable case study on biodiversity and regenerative design.”

The second part of the State Design Book is now live, a new resource featuring a range of excellent housing from across Victoria.

The projects featured in ‘Community Choice’ were drawn from a longlist nominated by the Victorian public in 2025, and are presented by typology, from townhouses through to precincts.

A panel drawn from the OVGA’s Independent Design Review Experts selected the 28 featured projects. Through the process of shortlisting, common themes across the most popular projects became apparent, explored in a series of editorials, from the value of generous circulation spaces to the benefits all scales of landscape opportunity can add.

In the foreword, Victorian Government Architect and Chair of the panel Jill Garner said “We hope the selection of buildings in this book will strengthen understanding across government, industry and our community of what good design looks like.

"We hope it helps to embed demonstrable value in the extraordinary number of new homes needed across Victoria, offering the attributes people want, in the places where they want to live. We can change perceived shortfalls of a denser way of living through exemplary design.”

Bricks might look like a simple, natural choice, but context is everything when it comes to healthy material selection.

How a home is designed, constructed, and the materials they’re used in combination with, are as important too.

Mould on the outside of a home may not seem like a big deal, but I learned the hard way, it absolutely is.

Mould appeared on a brick wall outside my bedroom in a Sydney apartment once winter set in, and was so detrimental to my health, I had a permanent cold and my health deteriorated so badly within 6 months of moving in, I had to move (I’d lost count by then, of how many homes I’d stayed in, in Sydney, in my search for a home, in the 12 month period prior to this home 🙄).

This is why I’m so passionate about educating builders and designers to understand not just the health and environmental impacts of building materials, but why the context in which they are used is so important when guiding clients towards healthier choices.

Healthy material selection isn’t black-and-white. It’s nuanced, and decisions should be shaped by site conditions, budget, health sensitivities, and more.

We assess more than 70+ materials against 9 health + environmental criteria in the #HealthyBuildingMaterialsMastermind.

• our July group is now full, but applications are still coming in, so we’re taking expressions of interest for a second group (we need to hear from you by this Friday).

• Due to new resources being added to support client communications, and steps being added to our application and certificate process, the price will increase on 1 July.

📩 comment Mastermind below or head to the link in bio for info and to express your interest.

Comment scorecard if you want to take a short test to see where your healthy materials knowledge is currently at; identify gaps and suggested areas and resources for improvement.
