Climbing Journal Entry No. 17, Saturday, March 28th, 2026 - I attended a bouldering competition held by Oklahoma Baptist University’s Climbing Club. This would be the first time I would actively spot another climber while they climbed boulders and I was admittedly nervous. My mind went to the Members Route Setting night earlier that week where I briefly watched the setters spot other climbers, giving me a glimpse of what to expect. Not to repeat the mistakes I made during OSU’s Red Dirt Pump fest a month prior, I examined the routes and visualized what I’d need to climb first so that I would qualify. In other words, I did some route-reading 😉 I was also glad to see the smiling faces of OU’s collegiate climbing team, especially Rachael here, knowing she’d crush it. I wouldn’t consider bouldering one of my strengths. I’m nervous about falling from an incorrect hand position or improper foot placement. To my surprise, I scored higher than expected and was shifted from ladies intermediate to advanced. Grace accompanied me to difficult routes, challenging my skills on a climb with the highest points - which I flashed, another unexpected moment. While I don’t have it on camera here, I recall the route having brown holds that required strong tension, balance, and calf strength. The holds weren’t terribly difficult to grip, but were spaced so far apart that committing to the reach was without question. IIRC, there was a sloper hold that would have thrown many off. This is where I say that Threshold’s brutal bouldering style is what adequately prepared me for difficult comp challenges. The routes were balanced in variation - tall climbs, flexible tension, traversing, dynamic movement, pockets (which I did not do), and rough holds that absolutely shredded our hands every time we tried to grab them 😂 This was a fun competition with wonderful hosts like @claire3lise3 and a bake sale nearby was - wholesome treat. Where there’s competitions, there’s new faces to climb with. Looking forward to the next encounter 💪

Climbing Journal entry No. 9, February 28th, 2026 Oklahoma State University, Stillwater Red Dirt Pump Festival - women’s intermediate division. I reflected much over how I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience here at RDF. Time used most effectively? Debatable. I was impressed by the variety of route setting done in a limited space and wanted to explore them all. So, I went about the ropes without much thought to anything else. However, I was nearing the 1 hour mark when announced that 5 sends minimum were necessary to qualify. At the time, I only had 3 sends total, as I spent most of my time exploring different routes that were more suitable as projects than red-points. While fulfilling, I was distracted from the original assignment - to compete. I had to quickly switch gears and focus on flashable grades so that I would at least qualify. Afterward, I chose to capitalize on points gained from routes I’d flash in the shortest amount of time, and a few others I’d send with another attempt. To my surprise, I placed first in the women’s intermediate division. The highlight of the competition was seeing familiar faces - especially Rachel - crushing it on the routes. Rachel’s skill, strength, and grit landed her in first place for the women’s advanced category, a victory well earned. @cross.climbs It is always a pleasure to see familiar faces during these events.

first comp of the season off to a great start with my first boulder league win. feels a bit odd to be competing when the US is going down like the titanic but we gotta have joy from somewhere to keep pushing through. excited to see where this season goes! 📸ID: a podium picture of nat in the middle, rachael in second, an raven in third. they are all squatting on the podium bc the boxes were very unstable
