[1/3] On this special day, International Women’s Day, we reflect on the remarkable achievements of women in Africa, the Diaspora, and worldwide.

On Ghana’s Independence Day, we had the pleasure of hosting a group of bright young students from Accra Girls Senior High School (@the.agiss._) for an event. These aspiring poets were all finalists in the Ghana Heritage Poetry Competition organised by the Rotary Club of Accra-Ring Road (@rrcrotaract).

Their presence brought a vibrant energy that filled the library with the hope and promise of the future for Ghana and Africa.

Guided by our brilliant Black Atlantic Residents, Crystal Tettey 🇬🇭 🇲🇬 and Kim Reynolds 🇺🇸, the students delved deep into the art and craft of poetry, exploring themes that capture the essence of our shared heritage. This workshop was not only a celebration of creativity, but also a testament to the power of these young women to shape our cultural narrative.

🎉 Congratulations to Mensah-Bonus Agyarewaa, the winner of the competition.

A special thank you to Fafana Ali, Estella Apenuvor (@estella_apenuvor), and the teachers of Accra Girls Senior High School (@the.agiss._) for making this prize and event possible. Their efforts highlight the significance of this International Women’s Day, reminding us of the bright future these young women represent.

The purpose of the LOATAD Black Atlantic Residency is for writers from across Africa and the African Diaspora to explore the question, “What is Africa to me?,” both as an individual and as a global family, within the context of the Black Atlantic and our relationship to the past, present, and future.

Here, our Black Atlantic Residents visit Assin Manso Ancestral River, Elmina Castle, and the Elmina Java Museum in the Central Region of Ghana.
