“You’re just a paramedic.”

I see this attitude more often than I should, especially from people who don’t fully understand what prehospital medicine actually requires.

Paramedics aren’t doctors. We aren’t nurses. We’re not trying to be.

Paramedicine is its own profession.

Our “treatment room” might be an ambulance, a bedroom, a highway, a fireground, a tactical environment, a collapsed structure, or somewhere far from definitive care.

We assess. We develop differentials. We interpret findings. We make treatment and destination decisions. We perform invasive procedures. We administer medications. We treat, reassess, and adapt sometimes with limited information, limited resources, and nobody else coming through the door.

National EMS education standards even include the ability to formulate a field diagnosis.

Does that mean paramedics have unrestricted diagnostic authority? Absolutely not. Scope varies by jurisdiction, protocols, credentialing, and medical direction.

But different scope does not mean lesser profession.

And this goes both ways.

EMS shouldn’t talk down to nurses. Nurses shouldn’t talk down to medics. Physicians, respiratory therapists, techs, firefighters, law enforcement, military medics we all bring different education, experience, and expertise to the table.

A good clinician knows what they know.

A great clinician knows what they don’t and respects the people who might.

At the end of the day, we’re not competing.

Different professions. Different expertise. Same patient.

Now everybody play nice before Slide 8 happens. 😂
