Introducing 2022 grantee Julia Csekö!

Julia Csekö is a Brazilian immigrant, community organizer, educator, independent curator, and visual artist, whose practice connects to several communities of greater Boston. Their studio practice has been focused on seeking alternatives to capitalist and patriarchal structures and bringing to light referential works of literature through my written paintings. The series "Speaking Truth to Power" is a ramification of their word paintings featuring excerpts of writings by women, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA thinkers.

Csekö is the curator for Sanctuary City at the Somerville Museum on view until Nov 19, a group exhibition addressing ideas of immigration and community building. Her current project, “Pauca Paucis” is a durational performance on wealth inequality in Latin America and produced in collaboration with videographer Aaron John Bourque and co-directed with Matthew Barrieau.

Duty-Free Paradise performance on Oct. 8, 2022 @ 7 pm is part of Sanctuary City exhibition curated by @csekojulia at the @somervillemuseum exhibiting Sept. 16-Nov. 19, 2022.

It will be in collaboration with Filipino-Chinese mezzo-soprano Pauline Tan ( @phibbork ). This work is part of a new series SONGS for LAND far away at SEA a project that focuses on Trans-Pacific connections and an extension of @dfp_dutyfreeparadise series. In this performance both of us will take an approach of improvisation, I'll be focusing on experimental voice work and playing the ancient #kulintang gong from the Philippines while Pauline will sing traditional Ilocano Filipino Folk songs in the operatic style.

Unfortunately Pauline will not be able to join in person but their powerful voice will be present.

This performance project and exhibition is supported by a 2022 Local Cultural Council Grant from the Somerville Art Council @somervilleartscouncil

Hear from curator Julia Cseko and participating artists during a public reception of the current exhibit Sanctuary City: tomorrow, Saturday, September 24th, from 12 pm-5 pm.

This exhibit delves deeper into, What is a Sanctuary? And why do we need them? The first reaction is generally positive, of preservation, of safety. However, the conversation becomes more complex when we explore this term deeper. Could we compare Sanctuary Cities to natural preserves and Indigenous Reservations?

We are not here to support the notion of a Sanctuary or the concept of a Sanctuary City with acceptance or docility, but to analyze the underlying reasons for its existence. Should we be thankful for these spaces for the paltry protections they offer? Or should we be focusing on changing the systems that make Sanctuaries necessary? I believe the latter. ____Excerpt from @csekojulia Curatorial Statement.

Joanna Tam is a Hong Kong-born, Boston-based visual artist and educator. She is a participating artist in the upcoming exhibition Sanctuary City. Opening at the Museum on September 16th, 2022.

Joanna's work examines issues of migration, the construction of national identity, the notion of home, and one's connection to a place. "I Just Want a Home" will be an installation of photo-based objects and text created in response to aggressive and inhumane immigration enforcement policies.

Shoutout to Studio Fresh Boston who did a phenomenal job bringing the piece to life in a couple of short weeks!
