How can cooperative building succeed today and what political, financial, and planning-related challenges stand in its way? “Coop in der Praxis” brings together actors from research, practice, and cooperative work to discuss exactly these questions. The program connects contributions from concrete projects with a broader discussion of what universities, teaching, and research can learn from these experiences, and how they can better support cooperative processes. We also invite you to join us for a shared dinner organized by Coop Mensa. The event is made possible through the SS26 project funds of Roundabout e.V. Our heartfelt thanks go to all guests, contributors, and supporters. We look forward to seeing you there!

POSITIONEN by Florian Hertweck
Thursday, 12.02.2026, 7pm at Room A151, IfA
A liberal-conservative approach to land has enabled cities to develop through expansion or demolition and new construction. Both paths to growth are no longer sustainable in view of climate change and resource scarcity. Repair, care and maintenance are the values of an era of ecological reproducibility in which the building sector overcomes its negative impact on the environment. But does this mean the end of architecture? Are we no longer able to build new, even though we are confronted with the greatest social challenge of our time – the housing scarcity?

Florian Hertweck is Professor of Architecture at the University of Luxembourg and co-founder of Less Yellow architecture urbanism. His work focuses on the socio-ecological transformation of urban landscapes. He curated the Luxembourg Pavilion at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale and co-curated The Great Repair exhibition in Berlin and Paris. His most important publications are Architecture on Common Ground. Positions and Models on the Question of Land (Lars Müller Publishers 2020), The Dialogic City. Berlin wird Berlin (w. A. Brandlhuber and T. Mayfried, Walther König Verlag, 2015), and the critical edition of O.M. Ungers‘ and Rem Koolhaas‘ The city in the city. Berlin: a green archipelago (w. S. Marot, Lars Müller Publishers, 2013).

This POSITIONS lecture with Renan LARU-AN is the first in the GROUND TALKS SERIES organised by the Habitat Unit.

Renan G. LARU-AN is a curator and theorist in contemporary arts. He creates exhibitionary, public, and research programs that study “insufficient” and “subtracted” images, subjects, and artistic works unsettled by development and integration projects. Renan is the founder of DiscLab | Research and Criticism, co-founder of the Philippine Contemporary Art Network (PCAN) at the Vargas Museum of the University of the Philippines and was formerly the artistic director of SAVVY Contemporary in Berlin. His practice includes the organisation of festivals, biennials and cross-disciplinary initiatives. in Prague, Singapore, Jakarta, Sharjah and Yokohama.

In his lecture „Soil Accompaniment: Exercises for Architecture after Architecture“, Renan reflects on the Project Soil-beings (Lamánlupa), currently being exhibited at the Venice Biennale of Architecture. He elaborates on the capacity of soil and soil-beings to produce methods of accompaniment (companionship or even comradeship) within and alongside the development of architecture. To do so, his lecture draws on experiences during the course of research-making and field communion across the Philippine archipelago in preparation for the Biennale, in which the project encountered a persistent display of architectural imagination from non-architects. While discussing soil being architecture, Renan will talk about “creative exercises” and how soil can transform architectural imagination by transforming initiatives/projects into an adventure in relationality that offers another durable foundation for practising the built environment.

This lecture will be accompanied by two impulse presentations from Prof. Dr. Antoine Vialle (Chair for Transitioning Urban Ecosystems) and artist and researcher Marina Resende Santos. The event will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Anke Hagemann and Natacha Quintero González

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

SPECIAL SESSION 16: Urbanised grounds – plural perspectives on
land and soil

WPSC 2026 - World Planning Schools Congress
June 29–July 3, 2026, Finland (Helsinki, Espoo, Tampere)
Peripheral Visions - Rethinking Planning

This special session underlines the need to join forces, disciplinary and otherwise, to rethink
planning with and through urban(ised) grounds. It explores perspectives that challenge the
bird’s-eye view embodied in dominant planning and land management approaches, the
commodifying gaze upon urban land that favours profit over justice or equity, and the
anthropocentric visions that drive extractive practices on urban(ised) grounds.

The deadline for sending abstracts is November 11th, 2025

Applications (max. 300 words and up to 6 keywords) should be made directly through the
WPSC 2026 website: https://app.eventos.fi/wpsc2026/website/call-for-abstracts

Issue no.38: Choreography out now

This issue investigates how memories, histories, and rituals shape not just bodies but spaces, transforming individuals into groups, notes into dances, threads into textures, and gestures into positions. In collaboration with @architects4thf , the issue explores how architectural design can move like choreography itself, creating spaces where collective sovereignty, movement, and social life unfold.

Thu May 16, 2024. 3:00 p.m.
Reading session with Chair for Transitioning Urban Ecosystems (CUE) – Institute of Architecture, TU Berlin
Location: @floatinguniversity
▪️
ꜱᴏɪʟ ᴛɪᴍᴇꜱ: ᴛʜᴇ ᴘᴀᴄᴇ ᴏꜰ ᴇᴄᴏʟᴏɢɪᴄᴀʟ ᴄᴀʀᴇ

Soil constitutes the thin, but dynamic layer at the interface of the geo- bio- and atmospheres. Central to the work of CUE (the Chair for Transitioning Urban Ecosystems) is the recognition of soil as more than just a physical entity but also a vibrant, more-than-human matter embodying histories, ecologies, and socio-political narratives. Through collaborative, bottom-up approaches, we engage in critical, transdisciplinary dialogues across sciences, humanities, and climate scenarios to explore how the matter of soil is entangled with broader social and ecological agendas.
▪️
In this session, we will be discussing the text “Soil Times: The Pace of Ecological Care” by Maria Puig de la Bellacasa @actual_occasions , whose work is positioned at the intersection of science and technology studies, feminist theory and the environmental humanities. From the text and field exercises we will collectively unfold the polysemic concept of soil and our understanding of human-soil relations through the lenses of care practices and studies.
