Our second Place to Be is with Julia Roberts, CEO of @cultureshiftcio.

Place to Be celebrates the creatives helping shape Moulsecoomb Place - people who live, work or have a connection to this part of the city.

Since 2011, Culture Shift has used creativity to support people’s wellbeing, confidence and connection, often in communities that rarely attract investment or attention. Julia has no time for people judging whole communities by their postcode: “Same challenges, same people as anywhere else.”

Now based at Moulsecoomb Place, Culture Shift has brought live music, spoken word and theatre to The Skep. Writer’s Block, hosted by poet Woodzy, has become a regular fixture where first-time readers share the stage with seasoned performers.

“We’ve had offices, but never a home,” says Julia.

The Skep at Moulsecoomb Place recently played host to another brilliant Writer’s Block event presented by @cultureshiftcio

Performers included headliner, Johnny Dobbin. Johnny’s a performance poet, PR and journalist specialising in the built environment and he put on a great show for the packed, captive audience.

There was also a partnership with @audioactive_ with some of their amazing young local artists performing on stage.

There’s more exciting cultural experiences and performance opportunities coming soon for residents of north Brighton to participate and be involved in - watch this stylish space!

Lately, Kaia has been working closely with @cultureshiftcio - ranging from speaking, to creative facilitation and only more to come! (First picture is Kaia on her way to workshop facilitation with CultureShift at @audioactive_ garden party 🎉)

Back in May, as a part of Circus Of Sound at the Brighton Fringe (in partnership with East Brighton Trust) she had the privilege of speaking alongside Michael Attenborough - their patron - and Val, who’s bloomed as a poet since attending Culture Shift’s sessions.

Their special pilot of “VICE VERSA”, a ‘Salon’ style evening of conversation, and creativity, we each spoke on the theme of Care and Culture. We also ‘flipped the script’, inviting Culture Shift’s supporters onto the stage to respond to prompts and questions relating to these themes.

She shared what care and culture meant to her, in relationship to each other, and as separate entities - deep-diving into the meaning of the words, their history of evolution and how they were shaped by the landscape of the times…and how this informs how we should approach care and culture in the present.

19 coastal communities. 2 countries. 1 shared mission. 🌊✨

We are so proud to officially introduce the Creative Coastal Communities Network (CCCN), a collective of 19 coastal communities (16 across the UK and 3 in Ireland) coming together to pioneer creative, community-led climate action.

Supported by the @esmeefairbairn and @artscouncilireland (for the Irish cohort), the CCCN brings together organisations, practitioners and local residents who believe that those facing the most acute climate and coastal injustices should be the ones shaping the solutions.

CCCN is about using creative methodologies, asset-based community development, and local wisdom to build genuine resilience from the ground up.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be opening up the network to share:

👥 The incredible people driving this work forward

🎨 The creative, environmental and conservation practices they work within

🏛️ The partner organisations allied in this movement

Stay tuned as we spotlight the places, the people, and the grassroots power shaping a better, fairer future for our coasts.

A great conference where carers voices were really listened to by Adult Social Care and NHS partners. Great work @careforthecarers

Great to see other partners and commissioners today too.
