POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Hope you enjoyed the long weekend! We're delighted to host Anuradha Vikram tomorrow in our last event this semester.

Anuradha Vikram will connect ideas in her book 'Decolonizing Culture' to recent curatorial projects involving socially engaged and publicly sited performance art works. Building on themes in her recent Los Angeles Review of Books essay "An Ethic of Caring Beyond the Human," she will discuss recent and upcoming curatorial projects that seek to build inter-cultural and inter-species connections.

Vikram is a writer, curator, and educator based in Los Angeles. As a curator and critic of contemporary art, she works with process-based, public, and participatory art forms, with a focus on transcultural approaches to technology, social engagement, and the body.

She has organized over 50 exhibitions with California-based and international artists over the past decade, notably Sonya Rapoport: Spaces of Life (Mills College Art Museum, Oakland, 2012), Social Fabric (Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles, 2013), Uncommon Terrain (Shulamit Nazarian Gallery, Venice, 2015), and the upcoming Jaishri Abichandani: Flower-Headed Children (Craft Contemporary, 2021).

Vikram teaches in the UCLA Department of Art, USC Roski School of Art and Design, and from 2016-2020, she was a member of the Board of Directors of the College Art Association.

The two women who raised me.
The one on the right is my nani and the one on the left is my mother.

Let me tell you of a girl called Savitri.
This..is her story.

Born in pre-partition Punjab, she used to love climbing the tree outside her mother's kitchen to steal mango pickles. A fiesty one, her days were spent being taken care of by her bhabhis and mother. That is a story now lost with her.

Then at the age of 22 she was married to a man who was more in love with his work of saving lives. But she fulfilled her duties. Bore him 3 smart, talented, loving and hardworking children. Their stories are still being told.

When her first child was born the world they knew was split into two. Both she and her daughter were never destined to see their birthplace again. Yet Savitri built her life with her husband for her three kids from a small room in Darya Ganj. That is a story for another day.

Her children bore her grandkids.
Fiesty, industrious, rebelious and intelligent like her. They loved her as nani or dadi and stole rusk from her cupboards or tasted her kheema. They told her stories of their video game characters and played rummy with her in the twilight years when she could no longer recollect the things she had remembered to forget. They will remember her in stories until their own stories end.

Savitri today left this world leaving behind a legacy in her eldest daughter who made that journey across man made borders, her son whose strength and will mirrored her own and her youngest daughter who guided her across the final border made by the heavens.

May we remember her name even if the world doesn't.
I will always call her nani.

Baik Art presents a monthly series of conversations between artists, facilitated by curator Anuradha Vikram. Join us Nov 19th 9am PST for the first dialogue in this series featuring artists Jaishri Abichandani and Mithu Sen.

Link to the event will be posted to our Facebook event page.

Jaishri Abichandani (born in Bombay, lives in Brooklyn) and Mithu Sen (born in West Bengal, lives in New Delhi) will discuss their feminist role models and their individual approaches to addressing political and social themes in their work. Their conversation will address differences in expectations for art between India and the United States, and the role that artists often take as leaders and collaborators within artist communities. @baikartgallery @curativeprojects @mithusen26 @jaishri.abichandani @baikkhneysser
