reconciliation is unfashionable, apparently, but not according to Steven Knight 🎙️

When Steven Knight - creator of Peaky Blinders, one of television's great architects of tension - took on his first feature documentary, he wasn't interested in a straightforward reunion story. He wanted to make a film about forgiveness and what it costs. About whether it's possible for two people, even brothers, even after everything, to find their way back to each other.

travis knight and the 16 years it took to make wildwood 🦅

Laika optioned Wildwood in 2011, and for film after film Travis Knight decided the studio wasn’t good enough to make it yet. When he finally gathered the team, he says, “the universe smiled a knowing smile, and it said: fine, but first you must suffer beautifully.” It took longer and asked more of everyone than he’d imagined, down to animator Dobrin Yanev spending two years on one giant golden eagle. “It’s not just 16 years,” Knight says. “It’s 16 years of lives that are reflected in this movie.”

In the booth, Jacob Tremblay and Peyton Elizabeth Lee had no sets or forest to work with, just Knight on Zoom, talking them through every scene. Every so often he’d ask them to jump in a circle for 30 seconds to get the energy up. “Silly things that feel stupid at the time,” Lee says, but you can hear them in every chase. She’s less forgiving about Tremblay watching the original Godzilla on his phone: “Watching anything on your phone is psychotic.”

in case you were also curious whether Aaron Sorkin's sympathy for Mark's character had eroded since The Social Network (2010)... it's complicated ⚖️

Jeremy Allen White, fresh off playing Bruce Springsteen, told us he wasn't sure he wanted to go straight into playing another real person - the mimicry, the physical transformation, the pressure of getting it exactly right.

Then Sorkin told him that wasn't what he wanted at all.
Play Jeff as you see him on the page.
