The other night I decided to join my wife for a trail run at Deer Creek, where I tapped out early and she proceeded her 11 mile journey to the other side of the lake where I’d meet her in Midway hoping to have a cooler full of fish.

Over the next 2 hours while she completed her run, I sat down at the water wetting a line. The first fish of the evening was a smallmouth, not the target species. I then proceeded to hook into 6 more fish but for some reason just couldn’t keep them pinned.

As the sun traded shifts with the moon, I prayed to God for a fish and I didn’t want to meet my wife at the other side of the lake empty handed. After a 30 minute dry spell, I tossed out my last cast waited a few moments and watched my indicator dunk. Next thing I know the line is flying through my fingers and the reel quickly began to scream.

After a great and exhilarating fight, I finally put what I believe to be my biggest bow out of this lake into the net. At last, I knew I would arrive to pick up my wife with cooler filler that turned into a delicious and memorable meal. I truly believe my prayers were answered with this fish, and God provided. This was one blessed bow.

Dear mountains,

I’ll always love you. Not just for your grandeur, beauty, your summits and valleys, wildflowers, trees, and the wildlife that lives among you (like my personal favorites the pikas and marmots). But for the way you teach me how to see God.

You taught me that endurance isn’t always about pushing harder or faster. Sometimes it’s simply staying or standing through the wind.

You taught me that strength can be quiet. But, you also taught me that life was never meant to be only about the climb.
Sometimes God asks us to look around and soak it all in.

You taught me to surrender the need to get somewhere and simply be where my feet are. To sit beneath something greater than myself and remember that I don’t have to control everything. I can just trust the One who created you.

To the mountains, you remind me that I am small (literally too because I am 4’ 11” lol), but never insignificant.
You taught me how to endure without becoming hard.
How to surrender without giving up.
How to keep climbing or running while still stopping long enough to notice the light.
And maybe that’s what I love most about you.

Found some fish in between conduit proofing, I never thought I’d be holding a cutthroat in my PPE 👷🏻‍♂️ Extremely grateful for my job that takes me to cool places. This definitely isn’t every day and I’d say a majority of my days are filled with submittal/materials review or testing concrete.

But today I was blessed with these beautiful views, learned a new form of inspection, and landed a few fish in my down time. God is always good, he gifted me with my dream job truly.

My first exposure to trail running was exactly 5 years ago in July 2021.

Bit of quick background- I’ve been doing photography for 7 years mostly on outdoors adventures. (I just do it for for fun now for my personal memories on @cvndvceperk and don’t care to monetize it these days).
When I moved to Utah, my first paid photography client here was an ultra marathon runner and I was hired to take photos of him running in the Albion wilderness during peak wildflower season. I remember being so excited because it was my first paid gig since my big move and it was right in my niche of photographing adventure and the great outdoors. But, the shoot was bunk lol. Because I was overweight, out of shape, not fit, and not used to elevation, I couldn’t capture what was needed. I couldn’t keep up with the runner and his runner buddies and I felt horrible because I was paid to capture them in their element and could barely do it. I was also embarrased for not being in shape enough, out of breath every second, and unable to walk a few feet without fighting for my life. I was a hiker at the time but not really much of a runner. And I remember thinking… damn, runners are insane lol.

5 years later, 40 pounds down, some muscle built, and hundreds of miles in running later… I’m running on those very same trails from that photoshoot. As an aspiring ultra-marathoner. 🥹

Full circle. It’s cool to see how much you can evolve when you get out of your own way. 2021 me would never believe this. 🫶🏼

Date night didn’t go exactly as planned but it was still a success. Managed one nice brown before the lightning rolled in, so we decided to pack it up early and get some seafood boil. We were even blessed with God’s gift when we left the restaurant. Nothing beats doing life with my wife ❤️
