POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

For many of us, tea carries the memory of family, home, and the journey in between. 🍃

At 茶頁 Tea Within the Pages, we’ll turn those stories into zines using drawings, writing, and collage inspired by the taste and smell of four different teas. A gentle space for newcomers to Canada to reflect, share, and make something meaningful.

📅 Wednesday, October 21 from 5-7pm
📍 Brighouse library
🗣 English with Mandarin support

Led by artist Wen Wen (Cherry) Lu, in partnership with Cinevolution. Register through the link in our bio.

Till Buergin @tebetebetebetbtbtb from Basel, student at Justus Liebig Universität gießen , intern assistant-producer at NAFAS, takes over ID Instagram to present artworks.

Tables, stoves, plates, bowls, pans: so many of the things holding or containing our food are circular in shape. At NAFAS, two video works in particular take the circle as a lens to zoom in on our plates, thereby telling about what happens around.

Wen Wen Lu's @cwensquared animation focuses on the rituals the kitchen table hosts; from cutting paper decorations for New Year's to cutting vegetables and sharing the meals. The hours that went into each of the hand-painted frames mirror the hours Lu remembers her grandparents preparing meals. In "Around the Kitchen Table" Lu makes these two languages of love and care coincide, commemorating her childhood in rural China.

Asuka Morita's @_moritaasuka "Ham Scream!" serves us slices of ham, projected onto a circular, black, wooden plate. By tracing the fibres of the slices of meat, the work is telling a story reaching far beyond the plate's edge. A story about grandmother, mother, father, child, the number four, death and more; showing how much can be read in the patterns, packaging and sequencing of our food.

Artworks are available for sale
Norita: 500,000 JPY - $3,200
Lu: Not for sale

Final week of NAFAS TOKYO at @buoy_tokyo until September 26. Open every day this week.

As this project wraps up, we are excited to continue sharing our memories and stories.

Letters to My (Grand)Parents started as a letter exchange asking "What do you wish to know about your (grand)parents and parents? And what would you share with them now?"

At the open mic and the afterparty with Concerts in Care, mahjong, and printmaking, we shared our emotions through tears, through joy, and through play. Hearing the words and stories being said out loud felt validating but also healing. We were simply there to bond, to grieve, and to connect.

The purpose of our Letters to My (Grand)Parents was to connect young adults with their parents and grandparents and also through surrogate seniors. To understand their story, record a part of history, and begin a conversation. It became an opportunity for many of our writers and ourselves to connect with our elders in a way we weren't able to before. Across language barriers but also the cultural divide.

It became an opportunity for our young Chinese-Canadian adults to connect with their elders and a chance to meet others who shared similar sentiments.

An intergenerational connection that will be cherished and remembered for a lifetime.

Keep in touch, with love and tenderness from Michelle and Shanna.

Under(currency) for @pci_developments and Ambi on Cambie — a public artwork at West 41st & Cambie Street, reflecting the layered past of the Marpole/Oakridge area through mythology, local history, and interactive storytelling. From early Japanese Canadian communities and historic streetcar routes to today’s growing transit-connected neighbourhood, the work brings hidden stories to the surface.

Ten mythical deities appear across the site: nine bronze figures above the entrance, and one ground-level story stone with a QR code connecting visitors to the digital world of Under(currency), where daily fortunes inspired by each deity can also be discovered online.

Created through a community-engagement program with students from Osler Elementary School, this project was made possible by an incredible team of collaborators.

Gratitude to @ballardfineart, Burton Bronze Foundry, @gnwsshop, @cwensquared, @howardai, @cherrywenwenlu, Antoine Bédard @antoine_bedard77 , and all artists, fabricators, educators, and community members who helped bring it to life.
