Case Western Reserve University is getting ahead of artificial intelligence by using it responsibly. The technology is now a complete field of study at the university.

“We have a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts in AI, so a BS and a BA. We also have a minor in AI,” explains Eric Kaler, CWRU President and Morton L. Mandel Presidential Chair.

CWRU has long been known for its world-class education.

This year alone, the school was named to Forbes “New Ivies” list, recognized by TIME Magazine on its Top Universities list, labeled as the fastest-growing university in the Association of American Universities by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and led the charge in securing an 10 million-dollar NSF grant for Greater Cleveland’s manufacturing industry.

The university is taking what Provost Joy Ward calls a “human-centered AI approach” to educate its students, staff and the public on ethical and practical AI use. This approach is yet again setting the university, and all of Greater Cleveland, apart when it comes to higher education and innovative research.

“Our unique place in higher education nationally, it could take a STEM-forward institution like us to lead the way in a human-informed, responsible, ethical, innovative use of AI,” says David Gerdes, CWRU’s Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of physics.

If Rhyder Swen could turn his CWRU experience into a video game, he’d name it, “School Life 2: Expanded Academics DLC” 🎮

The fourth-year computer science student has packed his CWRU experience with academic exploration, from computer engineering and data science to Japanese and mathematics, while also serving as president of Big Games Club and staying involved with several other campus organizations.

It was wonderful to meet Svetlana “Sveta” Morozova and learn about her work at Case Western Reserve University. Born in Moscow, Russia, Sveta now lives in Cleveland. She joined Case’s Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering as an assistant professor in 2019 and now serves as an associate professor. Sveta earned a bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics from Cornell University before completing a master’s degree and PhD in polymer science and engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her doctoral work included research on synthetic hydrogels studied as possible substitutes for the vitreous gel inside the eye.

At Case, Sveta studies how polymers move and change in solutions, gels and extremely small spaces. Her lab combines experiments and theory, using differential dynamic microscopy and light scattering to examine how polymer chains move, how flexible they are and how gels behave near surfaces. Polymers are part of everyday materials ranging from soaps and paints to contact lenses and connective tissue. In 2022, Sveta received a five-year, $610,000 National Science Foundation CAREER award to study how polymer gels interact with surfaces. In 2024, the American Chemical Society’s Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering selected her as one of 24 Early Investigators. She has taught polymer physics, and students working under her direction have developed hands-on lessons in polymer science and sustainability for Tri-C students preparing for the GED exam. In the middle of summer, teammates traveled from all corners of the country to Rochester, New York, to compete in our final summer competition.

Following graduation and with many members away on summer internships, a dedicated crew balanced their work schedules to squeeze in a massive testing push and critical frame repairs. Their countless hours in the machining shop and testing in the field ensured the car was track-ready before it ever loaded onto the trailer.

We pushed through unpredictable weather and travel delays to showcase everything we’ve engineered over the past year. Through it all, every part of the team stepped up. Our static events had a historic showing with our first-ever full cost audit and a 4th-place design finish. On the track, we took 4th across the dynamic events alongside a stellar 2nd-place finish in Suspension & Traction.

Endurance brought some tough moments, but a hard-fought race earned us third place and propelled the team to 1st overall at the Baja SAE Rochester competition, marking the 2nd competition CWRU Motorsports has won 1st overall in the teams history!

As we welcome new members and say a bittersweet goodbye to our seniors, we owe a huge thank you to our school, sponsors, families, and friends. We are incredibly proud of this team and excited to keep building. See you in Ohio this fall!

The Dean’s Networking Reception brought together alumni, students and faculty Wednesday night at a dynamic Engineers Week celebration. Three-degree alumnus Milind Bhanoo shared the story of LayerZero Power Systems, the hugely successful company he co-founded with fellow CSE Alum, Jim Galm. Then, interim Dean Chris Zorman encouraged students to network with the Case engineers all around them. Here are some photos from the event.
