CYFEST 17 in Yerevan: Media Art Between Humans, Nature and Landscape

The 17th edition of the CYFEST International Media Art Festival opened on 15 October 2026 at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts with the exhibition Natura Naturans: Human Beings, Nature, Landscape. Bringing together works by more than 35 international artists, the exhibition explores the relationship between human perception, natural phenomena and technological systems.

The exhibition engages with the legacy of the Organic School, revisiting its experiments with colour, light, space, movement and expanded perception. Sunlight, magnetic fields, geological matter, biological forms, cosmic radiation and electromagnetic signals become points of departure for exploring technology, the material environment and the limits of human perception.

The architectural setting of the Cascade also plays an integral role in the experience. Its interplay of interior and exterior spaces, vertical movement and natural light shapes the way visitors encounter the works, making the architecture more than a backdrop.

A public programme of performances, discussions, sound and moving-image presentations extends these inquiries into other artistic formats, from live performance and experimental sound to encounters with a humanoid robot.

On view until 17 January 2027 at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, 10 Tamanyan Street, Yerevan.

YERFORMANCE /performance/
Yerem Karapetyan /aka YERKAR/

A work of art is not a closed, dead object; it is an energy that transforms, moves, and is reborn. The performance is a metamorphosis of my book *Yerkar* [Long], as well as of my body and voice—taking place right here, right now. I reject the printed paper as a mere finished product—"Natura Naturans".

Standing before the microphone, I read my quatrains, tear out the pages, and glue them onto my skin and body. The pain and sound of the tearing paper transform into a noise that erupts into the surrounding space.
At the climax of the action, the physical book becomes completely empty, while my body transforms into a living, breathing, walking "text."

As an act of final liberation and conceptual closure, I cut off my hair—my curls—thereby materialising and casting aside the visual image that appeared on the book's cover. I place the severed hair inside the now-empty cover. The old image and the printed word are shattered, so that only

"Skin Shedding" is a 22-minute contemporary dance performance based on an absurdist literary work written by the choreographer.

The action takes place in an underground world inhabited by faceless beings. Within this symbolic environment, the body becomes the primary means of expression, revealing the human inner world, memory, pain, and transformation.

The central idea of the performance is that throughout life, every person accumulates emotional and psychological scars.

Eventually, these scars become so overwhelming that the individual is forced to embark on the difficult journey of "skinning"—a metaphorical process of shedding old layers.

Passing through different stages of this transformation, the character gradually releases accumulated wounds, purifies the self, and is reborn with new skin and a renewed identity. Emerging from a foggy reality, the character enters a new world transformed.

Movement, space, light, and music merge to create a symbolic stage language inspired by absurdist literature.

CYFEST 17 @cyland.lab. Natura Naturans: Human Beings, Nature, Landscape.
