Apotropaia
June 28th – Aug 2nd
Curated by Andreas Mallouris & Neal Rock

Cynefin Athens is pleased to present the group exhibition, Apotropaia, opening on Saturday, June 28th. In; The Queer Art of Failure, Jack Halberstam explores failure as an epistemic, counter- hegemonic force whose capacity and form gives visibility and meaning to histories, bodies and ways of living that have long been rendered invisible. Ostensibly negative qualities such as emptiness, limitation, ineffectiveness, sterility, and unproductiveness, when twinned with flourishing, joy and boundlessness, give definition to creative practices with roots in queer and decolonial countercultural histories.

In Athens today, herms no longer mark an urban landscape whose architectural makeup and communities bear the ravages of longstanding socio-economic deprivation. The apotropaic qualities of herms - ancient Athenian city markers - today can be found in the many ways that creative communities reform individual and collective imaginaries. Artist-run gallery spaces are abundant in a city that provides little monetary incentive for artists to equate success with financial remuneration. One form of turning away or refusal – the failure to operate as other cities have articulated capital (London, New York) - provides an opportunity for different forms of flourishing. Whilst the artists in this exhibition are neither a cohesive whole, nor grouped together thematically (another ‘failure’), many have forged the permission to say yes to material and intellectual ways of being that originated in othering, invisibility, the hyper-visual or exoticised. What we encounter are various reformations of the human, not as a coherent form or subject, but rather as mutable, ruptured, potential, imagined or contaminated – the culmination of many moments of joy, failures and refusals along the way.

Why Sell with Hypha Curates?

Putting work on our platform doesn’t prevent representation with galleries, it is designed to work alongside it. We exist to support the charity we are not a “for profit” organisation or a competitor.

We do not seek to represent artists as we are not a gallery, but instead we aim to introduce your work to a new audience, and to the charity’s collective audience that continues to grow with every show we do, and every studio we create.

*Now open: Artwork Submissions**
Submit work before the 20th July and your work will be eligible to selected for Hypha Studios exhibition during Frieze week 2025. Artwork submissions are via the link in bio or via Hypha Studio’s website.

Matthew Carey-Williams will lead an artist talk @kupferproject on 30th April. Tickets are available for free in my bio or via the gallery website. Book to avoid disappointment.

I’ve known Matt for 18 years now and had the pleasure of working with him and I’ve got to know him as a very good friend, staying up late listening to Bowie or Iggy and talking about how the world can be changed by art.

His passion for the arts and also for people is evident in all of his work, bringing artists to collectors and vice versa. A little over a year ago Matt opened the doors to his own gallery and the exhibitions have been phenomenal, an amazing example of this is the current show by @laurengracebrown.

For this exhibition Matt has produced a detailed and deep diving essay “Ebb Spiked: Palindromes of Practice and Purpose in The Art of Five Artists” which is available to read via his or the Kupfer website and is also available to read in physical form at the exhibition.

Matt will be joined by myself, as curator, and artists @d_mtrk @jamesalechardy @jodydeschutter and @laimaleyton answering questions and speaking about their artistic practices and the exhibition.

“The Beginning
The beginning is only the end seen backwards in the exhibition, Ebb Spiked, curated by Dan Allison for Kupfer Project Space in London. This show brings together five multidisciplinary artists whose variegated practices all press - as a form of physical
pressure and intellectual resistance – against ordinarily articulated canonical assumptions, be they empowered by the proposition (and entanglement) of object and
subject or, equally, contained and even diluted by the limitations placed on the shape and shuffle of artistic process.

This is a show where painting is performative; where sound rests in space like sculpture; where words become colours; where text, subtext and context are all interrogated to such an extent that the language we usually use to describe art (and its author[ity]) no longer really satisfies given the prismatic lens the
exhibition offers and, by extension, the multivalence of meanings it issues, as idea,
narrative and debate.” Matt Carey-Williams

This coming Wednesday - 30 April - I’ll be moderating a panel discussion at Kupfer Project Space in Hackney, celebrating all the artists included in the gallery’s exhibition there, “Ebb Spiked”, curated by Dan Allison. We’re going to ponder and wonder; muse and ruse; natter and patter around a loop of interconnected ideas covering practices, processes, multi-media, meaning and matter, sound and structure. I’m looking forward to it immensely. Along with Dan, I’ll be joined by four artists: Eva Dimitrakopoulou, James Alec Hardy, Jody DeSchutter and Laima Leyton. Free tickets are available on Kupfer Project’s website (kupfer.co). The talk starts at 7pm and we’ll all be in the pub by 9pm. Come along! All are welcome!
