My 2016 reflection: Just an ORDINARY TOMGIRL 😉

A time of transition and a really, really bad haircut! 😂
If you don’t know, I was a professional Adaptive Skateboarder (WCMX) before I surfed. 2016 was the year I transitioned between sports, and changed my wardrobe for the better. Let’s just call it my emo faze, that lasted way too long. If I’m being honest, my favorite part was being a mentor to young kids with disabilities and opening their eyes about skating and changing their view and mindset of what society called obstacles: things like stairs or curbs, big hills, etc.
I was also featured in a documentary called Tin Soldiers that premiered

My sister Sydney also had her first kidney transplant that year: I will always remember that we slept on the couch together of the night before her surgery.

In the early days of adaptive surfing, I was the only woman, but I like to give a spotlight to my family because back then there was no Water Safety and even my mother Heidi suited it up and helped out in the water.
Yes, I did hold my own with the boys: those were the good old days!

2016 was an entire dream.

A year into my paralysis, I decided to road trip out to California by myself, meeting other Wheelchair users I found in support groups on the Internet.

I got to shoot guns, make new friends, and adventure.

When I was back on the East Coast, I was out partying with my friends or racing off road in my Polaris single seat, Ace.

Writing my book and reliving these memories with such a good time.

I’m grateful for the growth I have from these moments, but I’m also grateful for the memories.

Last summer, we had the honor of filming Darryl Tait (@d_rail) at Life Rolls On in Carolina Beach. Watching him charge the surf and carve the skate bowl with such power and precision was unforgettable. Darryl’s been paralyzed for 16 years, but that’s never stopped him from pushing boundaries and redefining what’s possible.

This year, his spirit will be here even if he can’t be. While handcycling along the Alaska Highway training for the Canada Summer Games, Daryl was the victim of a hit-and-run. He suffered broken ribs and other injuries, and he won’t be able to attend Life Rolls On this weekend in person.

But if you’ve ever seen Daryl ride, you know, this won’t hold him down for long.

There’s a GoFundMe to help support his recovery and medical costs. Let’s rally around a true adaptive sports legend.

Link in bio to donate. Let’s help get Darryl back where he belongs 🛹 #liferollson
