Life update: Brain cancer and surgery

On August 18, I had a craniotomy to remove a large brain tumor in my right medial temporal lobe and hippocampus. The exact type of tumor I had is very rare specifically in women of my age, but the surgery went well and I have been recovering quickly.

My journey is far from over as I will very likely be having a second surgery within the next month, and this cancer is something I will live with, monitor, and treat for the rest of my life, but I’ve been able to keep a smile on my face so far thanks to all of the amazing people in my life who have shown me so much love and support. Thank you so much to everyone who has been there for me through this crazy ride. 💕

If this had to happen to me, I am grateful it happened at this point in my life. One of the most experienced neurosurgeons in the world for my type of tumor happened to be right here in Madison, my employer has been understanding and supportive while I’m out of work for the foreseeable future, and my parents were able to come up from Florida to take care of me.

The symptoms that got me into the doctor were severe episodes of deja vu and feeling like I was in an alternate universe. If you have any strange symptoms like this, please take care of yourself and get checked out. The first episode I had made me think I had a brain tumor, but I dismissed it as stress since these symptoms started in April just as I was preparing to graduate college, move across the country, and start a new job all in the midst of a pandemic.

What’s going on in all these pics:
1. Me cheesin’ on one of my first outings after getting my stitches removed, about one month after surgery
2. My MRI scan showing the tumor before my surgery (the long white shape in the middle)
3. I know all ya freaks wanna see what my stitches looked like so there you go lol
4. Some amazing friends I’ve made since being in Madison who have welcomed me so completely #FestFriendsForever
5. My work friends that I had to crop slightly (lol) and who keep me updated on all the juicy work drama I’m missing 😉
6. Another supportive friend!
7. Showing off my RBG pride in such respectful, grateful, loving memory 💕
