Celebrating International School Meals Day!

Did you know that NYC public school menus feature recipes like White Bean and Pasta Primavera, Kidney Bean Rajma, Kachumber Salad, and Jollof Cauliflower? @wellnessintheschools is a national nonprofit organization working with @nycschools @nycfood to bring scratch-cooked, plant-based, and culturally relevant recipes like these to the lunch menu for all one MILLION public school children in NYC! This program is called Chefs in the Schools.

In honor of this day, WITS teamed up with @chefsmanifesto and the #BeansisHow campaign to celebrate all of the school cooks preparing this nutritious food and talk to students who are tasting and loving it. Go behind the scenes with us at The Anderson School’s kitchen in Manhattan, NYC, with Dalia David of Chefs’ Manifesto, WITS Chef Camillo Sabella @chefcamillosabella, and the NYC School Food Team.

Celebrate this day with us by adding your favorite beans to a recipe and learn more at https://www.wellnessintheschools.org/program/chefs-in-the-schools/.

"I want to live a romantic life. I make food to feed you because I want to get to know you and love you and not to be afraid of you. The less we are afraid, the more peace we will have. By giving us knowledge, you teach us to love."

Hedai Offaim opens his heart —and his 25-seated table —plated with his harvested bounty of Israel. Dishes are interlocked, mosaiced with steamy pita freshly slung from his outdoor ooni oven, melt-in your mouth cheeses from his goats’ milk, freekah and grape salad with hints of lemon, to perfectly rolled malawah-style bread filled with legumes. It's not the food that tastes good, it's the people that make it taste good. And it was, put simply, just that.

His poetism changed my life. It was one year ago, his words hit me like a freight train and grounded me. He made me reflect and renew. It was my cycle of time, my year of release. What is my obligation to my land, my people, myself? What is the connection to my dream and my life and what do you do when poetism and practicality collide, when practicality wins every time? Is there such a thing of an inner human Shmita, and was I having one?

As food is wandering, so are we. We can easily get lost in that journey, but how do you paddle backward or forward? You go to the last place you knew. And from the many gifts Hedai blesses us with, I leave you with his words, "when you get lost, you go back to the last place you knew. That’s your way forward.” And ask yourself, are you in your poetic place that you dreamed of what you wanted to be in?

May you reflect, renew and find your HERE, to get you to your WHERE.

Shana Tova ❤️
