POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Damian grew up with his grandmother after losing his mother as a baby, and this graphic memoir traces what gets passed down when someone is gone, the objects, the stories, the love that travels across generations even when the people carrying it cannot. It is a companion to Other Boys in the best sense, the same honest voice but deeper. I cried at the end. Damian Alexander has been an auto-buy, even before his debut, Other Boys, landed. Hand-Me-Down is his most personal work yet. Check out our full thoughts over at bookcrushin.com and pick up Hand-Me-Down, out now!

Congratulations on the publication of Damian Alexander’s HAND-ME-DOWN, published today by First Second Books!

Damian’s mother died when he was a baby, and he has lived with his grandma ever since. Now, all he has left of his mother are old photos and the stories Nanny shares with him. Nanny has a lot of stories, some about his mom and some about her own childhood growing up in foster care.

When Damian feels lonely, he imagines what life was like when his mother and grandmother were middle schoolers like him. Through memories, stories, and daydreams, he feels closer to the mother he lost and begins to see the mother he found.

Damian Alexander is represented by Elizabeth Bennett.

Congratulations, Damian!

Congratulations to Rhonda DeChambeau’s TOP HEAVY and Damian Alexander’s ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING for being longlisted for the 2026 Massachusetts Book Awards!

About TOP HEAVY:

Fifteen-year-old Esme lives and breathes dance. Alongside her best friend, Mia, she is happiest when in the studio… sweating, stretching, soaring. And after a summer of nonstop practice, Esme and Mia earn coveted spots on the Elite dance team. Now that they’ve proven themselves to Miss Regina and the senior girls, it should be smooth sailing.

Except that Esme and Mia took the spots of two popular, well-liked dancers. Except that Esme’s dad hasn’t been able to work for months, and there’s hardly enough money for groceries, never mind dance tuition and recital costumes. Except that a stranger touches Esme during a night out, touches the breasts that have always felt like giant targets.

After years of being oversexualized for her large chest, this is the violation that pushes Esme over the edge. Was it her fault? Could she have stopped it? Why can’t she just be different? Esme stumbles, off kilter and adrift from her loved ones, struggling to find the strong, central cord that will pull her up and allow her to soar again.

About ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING:

Lately, life feels like a lot for Marcella.

Sixth grade seems complicated on purpose. Marcella keeps forgetting her homework or getting distracted while she’s doing it. Plus, her bestie has new friends, and her parents even want to move apartments. She’s trying to keep track of the changes―but absolutely everything is stressing her out! In this funny, thoughtful graphic novel, author-artist Damian Alexander tells a story of growing up, ADHD, and focusing on what makes you who you are.

Rhonda DeChambeau and Damian Alexander are represented by Elizabeth Bennett.

Congratulations!
