I’m sure I told this story during #prspd2025 but it weaves into #labou as well! I had only met @barnie_juancan once or twice in person before we started filming SPD. I joined @dan_perry_fx_ in applying Barnie’s Piggy makeup on his first day of shooting, and honestly, that was the last time I saw his human face for at least the next 6 months! All our interactions after that were always with him in makeup, and usually in character. And SPD fans know that Piggy is quite the colorful personality! So when this calm, quiet gentleman with a thick kiwi accent came up to me at the SPD holiday party midway through the season, I actually had no idea who he was! But his conversation about the show and my directing led me to believe he very much knew who I was! I was so confused! And when someone finally clued me in to the fact that it was Barnie, I was blown away with how completely he had transformed himself into Piggy everyday. He actually took my clay sculpture and brought it into a living, breathing reality. To this day it’s still hard for me to think of Piggy and Barnie as the same person. In my mind, Piggy is a real person. Or alien. You know what I mean. I was so impressed, I knew I had to work with this amazing actor again. And when you take off all that makeup, Barnie is a pretty good looking guy!!! 😂 I thought he would make a perfect French pirate, the dashing and regal Captain LeRouge! And his amazing ability to transform himself like a chameleon meant he would also be a fantastically ominous, treasure obsessed ghost. Again, it would take some convincing, because we hadn’t even started production and I was spending more money on airfare then we would on film stock (you can see why I’m not the financial side of the production partnership with @godzillag33k!) but I knew I was working with amazing talent and after 38 episodes of a show together I felt the sacrifices I would need to make in other areas were worth the investment in a team I knew would deliver. SPD was an amazing experience, but we had no idea how big of an adventure #labouthemovie would become…#filmmaking

When you get to work on a special film like THE CONVERT you realise how incredibly lucky we all are to be a part of bringing important New Zealand stories like this one to the screen

Here’s something to have stick in your head all weekend! Once we decided that the US version would be called Power Rangers:S.P.D., the next step was to create a theme song. We actually held auditions, tons of local composers and bands pitching their one minute jingles. I asked a few friends to create something, and I believe it was Shawn Tarkington that reached out to Ron Wasserman, composer of the MMPR theme, for his take. Without a doubt, the second we heard Ron’s concept, we knew it was the direction we wanted. He crafted a few variations based on notes and timing, but this was the very first version we heard. Honestly, I believe up until I post this that maybe only 5 or 6 people in the world have ever heard this version!!! It’s been buried on a harddrive for over 20 years. Testing the lighting rig that made Gruumm’s eyes glow red. This was during the morning of the first full application of the makeup. There were many pieces of this character made out of many different materials under a very tight schedule, but you can see by @dan_perry_fx_ ‘s expression that we were very happy (and relieved!) that it all came together! The eye light rig is another one of those things that would be so easy to do these days, and definitely more lightweight and compact, but 20 years ago we had to use larger, “super bright” LEDs, about the size of a pea, a heavy battery pack, and a hardwired rheostat to control the intensity of the brightness! #prspd2025 #powerrangers #makeupfx

The man, the myth, the legend! I love this guy! @dan_perry_fx_ was the Prosthetics Department Head on SPD. I’m sure he thought it was weird when production told him that the Executive Producer would be joining him in the makeup lab to sculpt, mold, and paint aliens! But it seems like it only took a few hours before it felt like we were life long friends, Dan, Terry, and myself slinging clay, telling Fx war stories, eating Nando’s at 2am trying to get the next alien done in time for the morning call. We worked incredibly hard (we made almost 100 aliens for the season, when production really only ever wanted us to make two!!!) but we laughed incredibly hard as well. I worked in all the departments, but more often than not, you could find me in the Fx lab. I took phone calls and meetings in there, so I could keep working on aliens. If that bothered Dan, he never expressed it. He always had a smile, and could solve any problem my over-ambition may have cooked up. His sculpting and painting style was very different then mine, but we bounced ideas and techniques off each other and the results created a much grander and diverse population for SPD. I enjoyed every minute of making the show, but I really loved the time I got to spend with Dan bringing so many ideas to life. #prspd2025

Uno de los trabajos que más disfruté hacer en Nueva Zelanda. “The convert” la última película de Lee Tamahori, dónde tuve el placer de formar parte del equipo de prótesis a cargo de Dan Perry. La aplicación constaba de 5 piezas que en conjunto formaban un “Moko” tatuaje Maorí.
