My first live TV interview is now available on TVNZ+ 📺 and @maraeofficial Fun fact: before we went live, my watch was buzzing away because my heart rate had hit 120 BPM while I was sitting completely still. 😂 A huge mihi to Dan Te Whenua Walker for inviting me into the kōrero and sharing the opportunity, to Scotty Morrison for guiding the conversation, and to Te Rauhiringa Brown and the wider Marae TVNZ team for making the experience such a positive one. We covered a lot in a short space of time: the opportunities AI could create for Māori, Māori data sovereignty, AI governance, infrastructure sovereignty, the future of work for rangatahi, and what it means for Māori to shape AI rather than simply consume it. One of the risks I raised was AI dependency. As we increasingly use AI for thinking, judgement and decision-making, we also need to ask what happens to our own capability and agency if we continually outsource those functions. For me, the future of AI cannot only be a conversation about access. It also has to ask: - Who owns the infrastructure? - Who governs the systems? - Who controls the data? - Who benefits economically? - Are Māori involved early enough to help shape what is being built? That is where some of the most important conversations are now sitting. A quick clarification: the Kawainga AI learning tool appeared in a separate segment immediately before our panel. I was not involved in that segment, had not seen the platform previously, and my appearance should not be interpreted as an endorsement or recommendation of it. I’m grateful to the Marae team for creating space for a conversation that went beyond what AI can do and into questions of governance, sovereignty, agency and the future we want to build. Special mihi to Scotty for the awesome tour afterwards and for introducing us to others across the wider TVNZ team. 🥰 The full interview is now available on TVNZ+ and @maraeofficial

What does it mean for Māori to shape AI rather than simply consume it? Native Sentient founder, Amber Taylor recently joined Dan Te Whenua Walker and Scotty Morrison live on @maraeofficial to discuss the opportunities and risks emerging as AI becomes embedded across our organisations, communities and everyday decision-making. The conversation moved beyond tools and applications into the systems underneath them: • Māori data sovereignty • AI governance • infrastructure sovereignty • AI dependency • the future of work for rangatahi • ownership, control and economic participation One of the key risks Amber raised was AI dependency. If AI increasingly performs our thinking, judgement and decision-making, organisations also need to consider what happens to human capability and agency when those functions are continually outsourced. Access to AI is therefore only part of the conversation. We also need to ask: • Who owns the infrastructure? • Who governs the systems? • Who controls the data? • Who captures the economic value? • Who gets to participate in shaping these systems before key decisions have already been made? These questions are part of the architecture of our AI future. Clarification: the Kawainga AI learning tool appeared in a separate segment immediately before the panel discussion. Amber and Native Sentient were not involved in that segment, had no prior knowledge of the platform, and participation in the Marae panel should not be interpreted as an endorsement or recommendation of Kawainga. A huge mihi to the Marae team for creating space for a deeper conversation about governance, sovereignty, agency and the systems being built around AI. The full interview is now available on TVNZ+ and @maraeofficial #aidependency #māoridatasovereignty #infrustructurematters
