Pest or pet? Trickster or friend? Enter the delightfully strange and wonderful world of foxes.

Foxes appear in our folktales, our religions, our gardens, and in our news. Like the fox who walked from Norway to Canada. Incredible! Or the fox who stole all the shoes in a German town. Very strange. They’re part of the canine family but totally act like cats. And in mythology, sometimes they help humans and sometimes they cause some serious trouble.

Sly Foxes nimbly explores the delights and contradictions of these curious canines. With her signature voicey and accessible writing, Dana Alison Levy discusses fox species and traits, where foxes live, and how they evolved as well as famous fictional foxes, world folktales, and much more. Interspersed between chapters are "Fox Tails," unbelievable but true stories about foxes around the world. There is still so much we don’t know about these cunning creatures.

Packed with photos, sidebars, and research, Sly Foxes captures the astonishment we feel when bearing witness to these mysterious animals, while also imparting a strong environmental message about protecting foxes and their habitats.

On Monday, Aug. 10, I was honored to join legislators, librarians, advocates, and authors at the Franklin Public Library to witness @massgovernor @maura_healey sign “An Act Regarding Free Expression.” This is the bill that I've been advocating for with @massfreedomtoread and @massaabb since mid-2025. It's been a long road with a lot of bumps along the way and I'm so happy that this bill has passed, providing protections not only for librarians, readers, and parents, but also for authors. Massachusetts' bill is only the second freedom to read bill in the nation (after RI) to protect authors, the people who write the books that are banned.

Thank you to our legislators for passing this bill, including bill sponsors Sen @juliancyr Rep @johnmoranfor9 and Rep @adamscanlonstaterep, as well as Chair @garballeysean who helped get this bill across the finish line. And special thanks to Governor Healey for signing this bill! It would not have become law without her support.

This was a massive team effort and I'm especially grateful to have worked with incredibly hard-working and dedicated authors @mcusolito @danaalisonlevy and @thatniclarue as we became legislative advocates practically overnight, learning how to do this while we did it. Democracy is really freaking hard, folks, and I'm happy to hang up my temporary lobbyist hat and go back to what I do best: writing books.

Happy freedom to read and to write, Massachusetts! 🎉 📚 👏

Yesterday was a proud day for promoters of free speech. I stood alongside my fellow authors and illustrators as we witnessed the Freedom to Read Bill signed into law at Franklin Public Library, America’s first public library. I am so incredibly grateful for the folks at @massfreedomtoread and our legislators who worked tirelessly to push this bill across the finish line. The fight for free speech is not over. Federal bills seek to cut funding to many institutions that promote free speech, and other states have laws on the books that promote censorship. Find out what you can do where you live and keep going!

This is a big day for us here in Massachusetts!! Thank you @massgovernor for signing “An Act Regarding Free Expression.” I’m so proud of the work I did alongside @malindalo , @thatniclarue and @danaalisonlevy on behalf of @massaabb and @authorsagainstbookbans as part of the broader @massfreedomtoread coalition.
I’m thankful to @juliancyr , @johnmoranfor9 and @adamscanlonstaterep for sponsoring the bill and @garballeysean for the work he did with Senator Cyr to reconcile language between the Senate and House bills. Thank you to my legislators, @mark_sylvia and Senator Rodrigues for their work on this, as well. And thank you to all of the authors, librarians, illustrators teachers, publishers, lobbyists, and citizens who gave testimony, sent emails, sent postcards, made phone calls etc. This is a win for everyone who lives here. #MassFreedomToRead #ReadFreely #mapoli
