Review: Borley Rectory: The Awakening
Dir. Steven M. Smith
Screening at Horror-on-Sea film festival Saturday 24th January at 10 AM

In 1900, Reverend Henry Bull and Kitty face terrifying paranormal activities in their haunted Essex mansion.

Our recent obsession with period horrors extends to indie filmmaking and Borley Rectory: The Awakening has jumped at the chance to be included in this number.

Borley Rectory is a famous haunted location which gives the film some grounding. The story was good and the film features some recognisable names from British TV.

The lighting and editing choices when we see the antagonists are well executed and the film takes time to introduce its characters. There is a lot of dialogue here which may prove more enjoyable for fans of these period projects. I personally enjoyed the latter half of the film as it featured more action and provided more intense scenes.

I'd like to thank director Steven Smith for sharing this with me in advance of the screening at Horror-on-Sea. Thank you for watching and let me know what you think in the comments.

We had a fab time at @horroronsea 2026!

🎬 Although we have none of our films showing this year, we still love attending and supporting the local film scene.

As always, being part of a film festival (as audience members) highlights the importance of local cinema, networking and independent filmmaking; we cherish the opportunities Horror-on-Sea Film Festival has given us for showcasing our films over the years and we’ll continue to attend for years to come.

Loving the horror-themed cocktails too, of course!

See you next weekend for Horror-on-Sea Part ii for ‘Sweeney Todd: Slice & Dice’, ‘Borley Rectory: The Awakening’ and ‘Horror-on-Sea: 13 Bloody Years’🍿🎃👻
