Finding inspiration often starts with stepping outside. We asked recipients of the @Airbnb Artist Travel Grant to share how travel shapes their creative perspective, from local markets and architecture to museums, landscapes, and unexpected moments of discovery.

Through its multi-year partnership with Art Basel, Airbnb supports artists and galleries as they travel for exhibitions, residencies, fairs, biennials, and other moments that move creative practice forward.

This edition features a strong Latin American and Iberian presence, with artists from Spain, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Peru. Their works explore memory, the body, migration, ecology, and power structures from perspectives that are as diverse as they are urgent. Reexaminations of founding myths, family genealogies, extractivism, and coloniality coexist with reflections on maritime trade and interspecies futures. Malta and the history of the Mediterranean provide the framework for issues that resonate with equal force on both sides of the Atlantic.

Malta Biennale 2026: Where History Speaks Through Contemporary Art
One is never prepared for the Maltese archipelago—its heady dichotomy of antiquity and modernity, its liminal position between continents. Under artistic director Rosa Martinez, the second edition transforms historic sites into contemporary art sanctuaries.
Standout installations: João Marques (Portugal) - Monumental burnt earth panels at the National Museum of Archaeology Lara Nickel (USA-France) - Large-scale painting installation, Grand Master’s Palace Vince Briffa (Malta) - Malta Pavilion at MUŻA Daniel de la Barra (Peru) - Malta Maritime Museum, Birgu, Halil Altındere (Türkiye) - Tapestry installation, Grand Master’s Palace
The theme “Clean | Clear | Cut” activates ancient fortified walls, museums, and palaces—allowing history to speak through contemporary art toward futures yet unimagined. My full review goes live on @artspiel April 27!
