E C L I P S E ☀️🌙

Saw a super cool split screen photo of a lunar and solar eclipse recently and IMMEDIATELY wanted to redraw it with my oc Luna using her eclipse spells! (Credit to @danieljstein for the original photo ✨)

For those not familiar with my wip story, “The Curse of Polaris”, Luna is a celestial guardian, an alien race of powerful magic deities basically.

While appearing small and adorable most of the time, Luna is actually an incredibly strong moon-type guardian who’s skilled in advanced healing magic and combat, and is often underestimated by anyone who’s arrogant enough. She is one of very few who has successfully mastered BOTH lunar and solar eclipse spells, two of the strongest spells a moon-type could ever wield!

Lunar eclipse is one of the most powerful restoration spells in existence, and while it’s not a forbidden spell, it is NOT recommended for regular use! It drains the users magic directly from their body (making them appear a red/orange tint while using it), turns it into restoration magic, and scatters the magic across MILES all around them, instantly healing and restoring anything within it.

On the other hand, solar eclipse is a terrifying transformation spell that grants the user EXTREME strength and agility for as long as they have the magic energy to use it! (Typically only for a few minutes, which is as long as solar eclipses tend to last irl 💛) This spell, unlike lunar eclipse, IS forbidden from using, except for only the most dire life or death circumstances, such as in self defense for example.

Also enjoy the additional little memes at the end lmao, the last one I feel really sums up those magic spells to a T 💀😭

SoLuna—a tale of shadows

August 2026 was considered to be in an “Eclipse Season”, where eclipses happen during a short window and lasts about 34 days. There was a 2 week gap between 8/12/26 and 8/27-8/28/26 when the moon went from a New Moon phase to a Full Moon phase. The Total Solar Eclipse happened on 8/12/26 during the New Moon phase and the Deep partial Lunar Eclipse happened during the Full Moon phase on 8/27/26-8/28/26.
As explained beautifully in @bbcskyatnightmag a lunar and a solar eclipse follow each other during this eclipse season. It takes the moon to change phases approximately 29.5 days to progress from the New Moon to the Full Moon. Since the Eclipse Season lasts approximately 34 days, if the moon reaches a node at New Moon, it passes directly between the Earth and the Sun casting its shadow on the Earth and producing a Solar Eclipse. About 14.7 days later when the Moon makes its way to the opposite side of the Earth at Full Moon, and because the Eclipse Season is still active, the nodes remain aligned with the Sun, the Moon crosses the other node. But this time it passes through the Earth’s shadow creating a Lunar Eclipse.
Lunar Nodes are the 2 points where the Moon’s orbit and the Earth’s orbit would meet. When the Moon, Earth, and Sun form a straight line it’s called Syzygy.
Who says astronomy can’t be fun?

This is a composite image created using images from the Total Solar Ecliopse observed from Burgos, Spain and the Deep partial Lunar Eclipse (cloudy one for me) from central New Jersey, compiling this unique dance of shadows, creating a cosmic ballad that I like to call “SoLuna—the cosmic love affair”

Shot in @canonusa EOS R6M2 and @canonusa 300mm lens. The Total Solar Eclipse was tracked using @benrousa Benro Polaris.

Last night the moon once again passed right through the earths shadow giving us a (nearly total) lunar eclipse. This is a quick HDR stack I did with a short exposure for moon blended with a longer exposure for the stars. This image almost didn’t happen given the weather but I’m glad me and @danieljstein decided to send it last minute to one of my favorite night sky locations to shoot this eclipse, enjoy🩸 🌕

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything here—more than four years, apparently! But this seemed like a pretty good reason to come back.
Dori and I recently traveled to Spain for the August 12 total solar eclipse with @capturetheatlas. After months of planning, practicing and preparing, we had the opportunity to watch—and photograph—one of the most remarkable things I’ve ever experienced.
This image shows roughly the final 20 seconds before totality and the first 20 seconds after. Each stage is an individual photograph taken as the Moon moved across the last sliver of the Sun, revealing Baily’s beads, the chromosphere and prominences along the edge of the Moon.
We were incredibly fortunate to spend the week learning from some outstanding eclipse photographers. Miguel Claro (@miguel_claro) worked with me on refining my exposure strategy before the eclipse, and his guidance helped give me the confidence that our cameras were ready when totality arrived.
On our flight home, I watched an editing presentation from Dan Stein (@danieljstein), another of our expert instructors, and used his method to assemble these individual photographs into the composite you see here. When the final image came together on my laptop, I had to resist the urge to show everyone on the airplane!
There are many more images still waiting to be processed, but I thought this was a good place to start.

A celestial flamenco….

The much awaited flamenco routine by Luna and Sol played out over the skies of Spain on Aug. 12, 2026–a country who has not seen a Total Solar Eclipse over their skies since Aug. 30, 1905. Carefully choreographed, Luna casting her shadow, like a traje de flamenca of a female flamenco dancer slowly approached Sol, starting the partial eclipse process. Gradually she progressed to obscuring more of the sun, until small segments of the sun remained visible for split seconds causing the Diamond Ring first which progressed to dots of sunlight straining to remain visible, forming the Bailey’s Beads. And then near total darkness ensues as the Sun gets completely blotted out by Luna. Bright, yellow solar corona dominated the circumference of the Sun, with bright red/pink plasma prominences seen extending from the solar limbs. Visible to the naked eye, the Sun appeared to look robbed from his usual strength, fuming at such apparent insolence by the Moon-the corona and prominences the only signs of his strength and apparent fury. The sky turned black under the umbral cone of the Moon, as twilight danced on the horizon out of the lunar umbra. Venus showed up bright with Regulus in the constellation Leo and Jupiter made faint appearances turning day into night in that brief 103 seconds of totality. And just like that, the Sun broke free of the Lunar embrace with brilliant flash of light revealing the second Diamond Ring and as Luna marched on in her cosmic trajectory, Sol was setting in the Western horizon turning red, as if in embarrassment of being eclipsed by Luna, leaving hundreds of umbraphiles craving for an encore. But, alas! Encore will have to wait till next year when this cosmic dance routine will be repeated on Aug. 2, 2027 as I will travel to Luxor, Egypt to witness one of the longest totality of 6 min 23 sec. Till then, I revel in the sweet memory of this Cosmic Flamenco above the skies of Espana.

Planned with @planitphoto and shot using @canonusa EOS R8 astromodified by @kolarivision and using @canonusa @canonespana 70-200mm lens at 70mm. The camera position was fixed to capture the entire transit of the eclipse.

Watch the moon’s shadow sweep in from right (north) to left (south) during the total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026

No words can describe the feeling of experiencing one of nature’s finest spectacles

I was surrounded by a wonderful group in the @capturetheatlas Total Solar Eclipse Summit in Valladolid, Spain. The excitement, energy, and joy were indescribable

I assembled this timelapse live, in real time, during my program the following morning. In fact, owing to a misplaced cable, the first time I actually saw these images was just 45 minutes before i walked on stage! Quite relieved everything worked out well

So, when’s the next one?

Happy 11th birthday to the foxiest snaggletooth who has brightened my world and so many others.

This year, I wanted to share some of the furry friends Roxy has made along the way. I’m so grateful for all the humans who have brought love into her life, but it truly makes my heart soar to see the friendships she’s formed with other animals too.

Some are still with us, and some have crossed the rainbow bridge…but all hold a place in her heart ❤️

If you’d like to spread a little birthday love, please consider donating to @rbarishelter or another local rescue to help more pups find the love they deserve.

Were you able to see the blood moon lunar eclipse earlier this week? It’s the only lunar eclipse visible from the United States this year and the next total lunar eclipse won’t occur until December 31, 2028.

Do you know why the moon appears a coppery red during the lunar eclipse’s totality phase? According to @nasa, the “blood red” appearance occurs when the entire Moon falls within Earth’s darkest shadow, called the umbra. Any remaining sunlight filters through Earth’s atmosphere, casting a reddish glow on the lunar surface.
