𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞'𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐎𝐥𝐝 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐟𝐢𝐭
🩷🧵 I have always enjoyed turning something old into something useful and new. Having grown up in a home of makers, crafting and creating new things has always come naturally to me. It is also something I like to teach my kids. So, I especially enjoy picture books that encourage a culture of reusing and repurposing.

📚 𝘉𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘦'𝘴 𝘖𝘭𝘥 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘖𝘶𝘵𝘧𝘪𝘵 is all about taking something old and turning it into something new and special. The book also introduces readers to fabric dying, embroidery, knitting, and tips on accessorizing outfits. From different members of her family, Bonnie learns how to tie-dye an old shirt, how to knit cute patches for her jeans, and how to embroider fun designs on her jacket. When the first day of school arrives, Bonnie feels happy and confident in her perfectly new old outfit.

Similar to the collection I shared last week, these are picture books about making the most of a situation that’s not ideal. In other words, making lemonade from lemons! 🍋

These titles feature characters who are thrifty, flexible, and innovative - awesome for character education! I personally connect with Luna’s Green Pet, the story of a girl who embraces a special 🪴 plant 🪴 when she’s not able to get a traditional pet.

Featured titles:
• Luna’s Green Pet | @sleepingbearpress
• Bonnie’s New Old Outfit | @albertwhitman
• It Was Supposed to Be Sunny | @penguinkids
• Madani’s Best Game | @eerdmansyoungreaders
• Building An Orchestra of Hope | @eerdmansyoungreaders
• Symphony for a Broken Orchestra | @candlewickpress

Have you read any of these yet? ❤️

I couldn’t let the first week of school go by without sharing this sweet gem.

Bonnie’s New Old Outfit looks at what it means to want to look your best for the first day of school but feeling discouraged because of being unable afford to buy new clothes.

With some creativity, shared skills and knowledge from family members Bonnie is able to create an outfit that is uniquely her own.

I loved how each family member shared a skill to help Bonnie up-cycle her clothing, empowering her to create her own new look with things she already had on hand.

There are also helpful instructions for dying clothes with natural materials, embroidery, knitting and other ways to accessorize.

What’s an eco-friendly habit you/your littles perform regularly?

🌎 As we get ready for Baby Bump to arrive ~ I’ve been more consciously aware of the state of the planet and world we are welcoming Baby into. In terms of the environment, there’s much to do to recuperate from the harm that’s been done, and to create a healthy planet for our future little readers and leaders.

💚 But luckily even the *smallest actions* can have a huge impact, and even the *smallest* of people can play a part.

📚 Check out these 6 featured picture books to help encourage eco-friendly habits with your littles, plus one special book at the end reminding us how amazing it is that we get to live on *A Planet Like Ours*
