I am grateful to be back in Kuala Lumpur but I am missing my tribe of audaciously talented crazies so much. Stay weird and wonderful wherever you are!! The @swatchartpeacehotel residency does an amazing job of curating talent, and as writers are in the minority, it felt even more of a privilege to be here. Writers, apply here, best residency and an amazing location. I published two nonfiction essays and am working on two more; and have a book that progressed very well 💕

‘first contact’ originates from science fiction, describing the first encounter between extraterrestrial intelligence and humanity. It marks an irreversible critical point, and also refers to the moment of impact when a viewer first encounters a system or space - an unanticipated experience. The logo is derived from a circuit switch diagram, pointing to the moment of transition and activation. Studio first contact is a London-based new media art studio. It focuses on translating complex systems into perceptible space and installations, exploring between precision and surreal imagination. Our work includes interactive installations, visual content, laser and lighting systems, as well as immersive environments. We have worked with clients including Lancôme, London Fashion Week, Ballymore, Mercedes-Benz, Beijing Poly Art, and Noryangjin Market. #londoncreativestudio #newmediaart #creativetechnology #immersiveexperience #studiofirstcontact

MOUNTAINS AND SEAS – SONG OF TODAY 山海 · 今日之歌 From ancient myth to laser light.
From ink and pattern to electric guitar.
From forest ritual to black-box theatre. Inspired by the Classic of Mountains and Seas (山海经), this project brings together performance, music, visual art, AI animation, exhibition, publication, workshops, and film — a living ecosystem of collaboration. Across the Surrey Hills, Omnibus Theatre, studios, and community spaces, we built a world where past and future meet, where myth breathes through contemporary bodies and sound. This has never been just a performance.
It is a collective act of imagining. A ritual.
A protest.
A dream. A space where ancient creatures walk through contemporary fire. Deep gratitude to every artist, musician, designer, filmmaker, sound engineer, stage manager, funder, workshop participant, and audience member who stepped into this world with us. Thank you @jamiebakerphotography for documenting this body of work so beautifully. And thank you @mikeskelton_ for filming our live show and capturing its energy with such care. The mountains are still living.
The seas are still singing. Thank you for sharing this journey with me. 🫶🏼 Text by @danielyorkloh Music by @beibeiwangpercussion @danielyorkloh @he_songyuan and @yuxiaochen.ins Actress @xanadujenn Movement artist @tashtung and @itsallaboutyvonne Lighting and set design @danni.studio and @aorbital Costume by @yicraftslondon Film in Nature by @willow.hazell Live show film by @mikeskelton_ Stage manager @bbrent.t Sound engineer @camilo_tirado Workshop facilitator @agirlatagallery Graphic design by @solxus Co-produced with @kakilangarts Funded by @aceagrams and John Ellerman Foundation #Mountainsandsea #stage #Liveart #Performanceart #theatre

“A Collective Art Jam for Extraordinary Times” (Jazzwise) “…. achieves a sense of ritual rather than narrative…. Scenes unfold like fragments of remembered dreams or half-buried cultural memory… it is precisely the work’s refusal to flatten mythology into digestible symbolism that gives it its haunting resonance… It is not merely a retelling of old stories, but a warning, a lament, and—most unexpectedly—a gesture of hope.” (Echo UK) “Visually the production is stunning…” (Everything Theatre) “York Loh shows a wily imagination… The text is highly layered… the combination of gutsy blues riffs, haunting flute, pounding drums and absolute gestural precision drawn from Peking opera coheres to make the piece a punchy, thought-provoking experience…” (Jazzwise) “… a thought-provoking, highly intellectual and magical dive into imagined worlds… ambitious, audacious, genre-defying… “(London Pub Theatres Magazine) “… a vivid meeting of ancient imagination and contemporary crisis…” (Sound Behind The Curtain) “Although director-actor Xie Rong (Echo Morgan) and writer-actor-guitarist Daniel York Loh are the major driving forces of the work, it is very much a collective creation, with an expressive score from composer Beibei Wang… The lighting and set design, courtesy of Danni Zheng and Ao Lei, deploy images and laser projections to depict landscapes and the inside of an aeroplane, while dancers Tash Tung and Fan Jiayi, narrator Jennifer Lim, percussionist-vocalist He Songyuan and flautist Chen Yuxiao bring meaning and nuance to the central story…” (Jazzwise) “A beautifully bewildering, swirling vortex of challenging thinking and excellent performance… fascinatingly textured; at times searing, but also poetic and comedic…” (Everything Theatre) Mountains and Seas – Song of Today 山海 · 今日之歌 My script is available on a truly beautiful vintage newspaper design by Can Yang @solxus Get in touch if you’d like one Photos @jamiebakerphotography “You made it “And that’s really all that matters…” Produced with @kakilangarts @omnibustheatre

⛰️ Transforming from Mountains to the seas 🌊 Feeling very emotional, sitting in bed after our preview last night. I am a solo action artist — I go to a space and respond to its energy and situation. Through the preparing of Mountains and Seas, Song of Today, I gradually became the director and producer of the show. Working with very experienced actors, writer and dancers and theatre manager and new media visual artists. I hold the responsibility! How to bring the most powerful version of each one of them and share the space as a whole. I anchored @danielyorkloh text and trusted @beibeiwangpercussion music vision, we followed @xanadujenn narrative and amazed in @tashtung and @itsallaboutyvonne movement, and completely totally transformed in @danni.studio and @aorbital immersive laser world. @he_songyuan and @yuxiaochen.ins joined us from last Sunday — just in one week they brought their years of craft and wisdom into the production, breathing of the Mountains and Seas. Deeply rooted in tradition but totally avant-garde. We still have four shows to go and four shows only!!! Please come witness this work! I am so proud to share my team with you! Ticket link in bio 🙏 @omnibustheatre Rehearsal film by @mikeskelton_ Thank you for your sensitivity and speed Mike! So honoured to have you capture those moments for us! ✨ Creatures in Light ✨ In Chinese, the word photography — 摄影 — means “Catching Shadows.”Moments of transformation shimmer and dissolve. We are delighted to share the second part of our photographic story for Mountains and Seas – Song of Today 山海·今日之歌. Art direction: @echomorgan Photography: @jamiebakerphotography At the heart of this production, myth meets modernity — a reflection on the fragile humanity and turbulence of our world today. Laser light becomes our abstract language of landscape painting, fusing with projection and 3D-printed set design by @danni.studio and @aorbital . In collaboration with @yicraftslondon our performers’ costumes intertwine contemporary forms with hand-woven Yi minority textiles from the mountains and seas of Yunnan — a place where mist, craft, and memory merge. Meet our creatures — born of ink, breathing in light, embodying both tradition and the modern self — mysterious, tender, and alive. 🦁 @danielyorkloh 白泽 🦌 @beibeiwangpercussion 飞廉 🐦‍🔥 @xanadujenn 九凤 🐱 @tashtung 瓦猫 🐦 @itsallaboutyvonne 青鸟 👹 Happy Halloween, everyone 🎃 Soundtrack: Monster 妖孽 Voice — @he_songyuan Xiao 箫 — @yuxiaochen.ins Percussion & Electronics — @beibeiwangpercussion Live performance: 2–6 December, @omnibustheatre London 🎟️ Ticket link in bio.
