Knowledge Is Myth: Chimeric Continuities opened last week at @carpenter_center_harvard and is on view through December 13

The installation in the first image brings together independently titled works made between 2018 and 2026, alongside reworked elements, in a new display under the umbrella title:

Here lies all his love of life. For what gives value to travel is fear: deprived of our mask, completely surface. Soul-sick, miraculously, the whole of life. The whole of lie.

A summer afternoon well spent with the Carpenter Center team exploring Walter Gropius House (1938) in Lincoln, MA. Designed as Gropius’s family home after he arrived to teach at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, the house is both a landmark of modernism and an intimate portrait of a creative life.

It was fascinating to imagine the conversations that unfolded here, with guests including Le Corbusier, Marcel Breuer, Joan Miró, and Igor Stravinsky. One of my favorite details was Gropius’s desk, still lined with small sculptures gifted by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.

I was especially excited to learn more about Ise Gropius, whose influence on the house, and on Walter’s career and the Bauhaus legacy, was profound. Her imprint is visible, from her thoughtful role in shaping the home to the earrings she fashioned from simple metal washers. A beautiful reminder that modernism wasn’t only about buildings, but also about the inventive ways people chose to live within them.

Carpenter Center Staff Picks!

One of the joys of Salad Days: Primary Information is discovering publications you might not have encountered before.

This week from the out-of-print section, curator Danni Shen @danni_sh recommends 'Godzilla: Asian American Arts Network 1990–2001,' edited by Howie Chen. Bringing together essays, correspondence, newsletters, photographs, and archival ephemera, the publication traces the history of the groundbreaking collective that championed Asian American artists and challenged exclusion within the art world throughout the 1990s. Both a rich historical archive and a testament to the power of collective organizing, it's an essential read for anyone interested in contemporary art, activism, and publishing.

"Given the wide-ranging activities of Godzilla, beyond exhibition making and visual material, this compendium is such a valuable resource on their collective, far-reaching work. Also shoutout to other books in the image: Trinh T. Minh-ha's The Twofold Commitment and Martin Wong's Footprints, Poems, and Leaves."

Salad Days: Primary Information is on view through August 16.

Open Thursday–Sunday, 12–5pm

Fifty years ago Ko Bong Zen Master gave transmission to Zen Master Seung Sahn, saying “You are the flower and I am the bee.” But, if the whole world is a single flower, then who is the bee? 🌷

Initially conceived as a series of performances in Chinatown, “Temple of Our Ancestral Dreams” a group exhibition at @paoartscenter curated by Wenxuan Xue (@innerchildsings) and Sung-Min Kim (@skimmilk.png), brings together an intergenerational group of artists—Lani Asunción, Feda Eid, Kenneth Eng, Zhonghe (Elena) Li, Joanna Tam, Yolanda He Yang, Ying Ye, and Michelle “Mimi” Zhang—to consider the material expressions of kinship and shared lineage though a wide range of media.

In this discerning quick bit, writer Danni Shen (@danni_sh) examines how the works on view embrace conditions such as segregated burial grounds, neighborhood erasure, grassroots organizing, and daily acts of care to trace histories of resilience and loss. The works, as she writes, “evoke the Chinese character ren 忍, meaning ‘to endure,’ which I have long held spiritually dear, its radicals placing a knife’s edge over a heart.”

Happy earth day 🌎🌍🌏 and perceive world sound!

In the Genjō Koan (13th C.), Zen Master Eihei Dōgen wrote on non-dualistic worlding and the interconnection between all things, an ecological view 🌼 “To study the Buddha way is to study the self. To study the self is to forget the self. To forget the self is to be enlightened by ten thousand things. When enlightened by ten thousand things, the body and mind as well as the bodies and minds of others drop away.”
