Crazy! I’m going through all my videos to free up space on my phone, but I think I will save this one from September. This was by my friend @dansternau !

A massive swath of Sooty shearwaters was captured by Cayucos photographer @dansternau on Sunday in south Cayucos. An abundance of bait fish close to shore has attracted diving birds for a few weeks - namely brown pelicans and terns and a few shearwaters - but it’s been years since we’ve seen the return of the sooty shearwaters en masse like this.

These migrating birds feed on fish, squid and shrimplike krill, diving 30 to 50 feet below the ocean’s surface to capture prey. During summer, in the Northern Hemisphere, they concentrate on the richest feeding areas in California, Alaska and Japan. When they find a large school of fish or krill, they fly over it in huge gyres as wide as a half-mile across.

Look for dark lines of sooty shearwaters flying outside the kelp forests and below the horizon line. In past years we’ve seen the line of frenzied feeders stretch from Morro Rock to the Pink House in Cayucos! Keep your eyes on the shoreline activity - they may still return, at least until the bait moves on to deeper ocean waters.

Oh wow, we had some monsoonal cloud conditions this morning along with rising temperatures over the next few days. That means back to interesting sunrises and sunsets. Cayucos photographer @dansternau was out early this morning for this breathtaking capture at Cayucos Pier. Thanks, Dan!

Have you ever seen a fogbow like the one captured this morning by @dansternau? A fogbow is similar to a traditional rainbow formed from sunlight bending through water droplets, although the droplets contained in fog or mist are much smaller than raindrops.

These tiny droplets cause the light to undergo different physical processes, most notably diffraction. The smaller water droplets in fog cause the colors to overlap and blur, giving a fogbow its signature white color. It is for this reason that fogbows are sometimes known as white rainbows.
These colorless rainbows also go by the name fogbow, cloudbow or ghost rainbow.

Rainbows happen when the raindrops fill the air. You always see a rainbow in the direction opposite the sun. Fogbows are much the same, always opposite the sun. So if you’re standing near fog and the sun is shining, put your back to the sun and look for a fogbow!
