Today was really one of those moments where I had to sit back and take it all in.

What started as a ribbon-cutting celebration at Earl Monroe turned into something so much more personal for me.

To have my son there and see his mother being celebrated in our school newspaper for the work I do with Love Day and Da People’s Assembly really meant everything to me. Because at the end of the day, he’s the reason I keep going, even on the days when I’m tired and have a million things on my plate.

Having my brothers, my coworkers, and a true friend there to share that moment and hear my story made it even better. I’m really grateful for the people who show up for me.

I just hope my son and all my kids, past and present, know that I do this work for them and for our community. I don’t always have it figured out. I get tired, I get frustrated, and some days I question how I’m going to get everything done. But I love what I do, and I love my kids.

And I want them to know that no matter where you come from, what you’ve been through, or what people think you can or can’t do, you still deserve to take up space. Especially in rooms and spaces where people who look like us haven’t always been welcomed or represented.

I’m just a Black girl from the Bronx who loves her community and refuses to forget where she came from.

And I’m far from done. ✊🏾

Let me tell y’all something… TODAY was amazing.

The Bronx Summit had some REAL conversations happening. Not the surface-level networking where everybody is just exchanging Instagram handles lol. People were actually talking about the Bronx, our communities, what we need, what we’re building and how we can work together.

And I really want to encourage people to step outside of your comfort zone and GO to these events, especially the ones happening right here in your borough. There is some real shit happening in the Bronx and some amazing people doing the work. Sometimes you just have to get in the room.

It was truly an honor to be one of today’s speakers AND then I received a citation?! Like excuse me?! 🥹😂

Then getting to sit back, listen to Wallo drop some JEWELS and really take in what he was saying… yeah, today was GOOD.

I left inspired. I left with new connections. I left with ideas. And most importantly, I left reminded that there are so many people who genuinely care about what happens next for the Bronx.

Today filled my cup. ❤️

Thank you to everyone who made the Bronx Summit what it was today.

Brisus with a Degrius. ( I love that name @sonofharlem gave me)

Yesterday, I became a college graduate.

And if we’re being honest, some of y’all met me as “the girl who went viral in 2020.”

What started as a little project, a little idea, a little act of community care during one of the hardest times in our lives became Da People’s Assembly.

Some people thought it would be a moment.

I knew it was a movement.

Six years later, we’re still here.

Thousands of families served.
Hundreds of students supported.
Countless lives impacted.

So no, this degree isn’t just about me graduating.

It’s about proving that Black women can build something from nothing.

It’s about proving that we can heal, lead, educate, organize, raise children, serve our communities, survive life’s hardest moments, and still achieve our own goals.

This degree represents every late night, every sacrifice, every setback, every prayer, every tear, every lesson, and every time I refused to quit.

A few weeks ago, I was recovering from surgery.

Yesterday, I walked across a stage and earned my degree.

As a Black woman, there is power in that.

As a mother, there is power in that.

As a Bronx girl who refused to let her circumstances define her, there is power in that.

And let’s be clear: y’all couldn’t tell me much before. 😂

But now? Baby, I got the degree to go with the résumé, the experience, the impact, and the receipts.

To my family, friends, village, mentors, supporters, students, and everyone who has loved me through every version of myself—thank you.

The little project baby is still growing.

The work continues.

And this is only the beginning.

Love,
Brisus with a Degrius. 🎓❤️

also, Hon. mention @leen_no_syrup I really thank you for being there and holding space and using your creative capabilities to make my day even more special#
