Thank you @dashahorb for the sweetest family portrait! It's hard to get a photo of us and the kitties and this style looks good on us. So happy to have a piece of her art representing my world.

People often ask where they can save money when it comes to their self-publish books. ⁣
⁣
When I decided to self-publish, I knew the illustration and printing would be my most expensive expenses. I wanted to stay on budget, but I did not want to skim on the artwork. ⁣
⁣
I realized that when it comes to picture books, the images are essential not only to the kids but also the parents. Your images must be engaging but also tell a story on their own. Here a few tips to keep in mind when looking for an illustrator for your book:⁣
⁣
1. Ask for an artist portfolio to see the artist experience and style.⁣
2. Ask for what method of communication works best for them (this will help with expectation and workflow )⁣
3. Ask if they have ever illustrated a book before. (There's a lot artist out there, but not everyone is good at telling stories with their images)⁣
4. Provide some story details and ask for a sample based on your story.⁣
5. Make sure there is a contract in place with details like ownership, timeline, price, and other vital information.⁣
⁣
It's important to remember the collaboration between the author and illustrator is the heart of the book, especially if it's a self-published work. This is because as a self-published author, you get to choose your illustrator. Choose wisely and take the step to make sure this relationship runs smoothly. Finally, I would say there other areas where you can save money but finding and retaining the best illustrator for your book isn't one of them.⁣
