Can Plants Get Sunburned?

What Is Plant Sunburn?

Yes! Plants can suffer from sunscald, a type of sunburn that occurs when intense sunlight and high temperatures damage leaves, fruits, or stems. This is especially common during heat waves or when plants are suddenly exposed to direct sunlight.

Why Does It Happen?

Sunburn usually occurs when:

* 🌡️ Temperatures are very high (often above 35°C / 95°F).
* ☀️ Strong afternoon sunlight hits the plant for many hours.
* 🍃 Leaves are removed suddenly by pruning, exposing fruits.
* 💧 Plants are under drought or water stress, making them less able to cool themselves.

Signs of Sunburn

* 🍅 White, yellow, or tan patches on fruits like tomatoes, peppers, apples, and grapes.
* 🍃 Brown, dry, or crispy spots on leaves.
* 🌿 Wilted or scorched foliage.
* 🍎 Fruits may become soft, cracked, or more vulnerable to disease.

How Farmers Protect Crops

* 💧 Water plants consistently, especially during hot weather.
* 🌿 Leave enough leaves to naturally shade fruits.
* 🌾 Use shade cloth during extreme heat.
* 🌱 Apply mulch to keep soil cool and retain moisture.
* 🌳 Avoid heavy pruning just before or during heat waves.

Why It Matters

Sunburn doesn’t just affect appearance—it can reduce crop quality, lower market value, and make fruits more susceptible to pests and diseases.

I decided to do a little experiment with a bunch of sticks.
When I bought this plant, the person who sold it told me it grew from a stick... so naturally I had to test it myself.

I took a long runner and chopped it into small pieces, making sure each stick had at least one node. Then I added them into this 5-inch self-watering pot filled with pon, placed it in my grow tent, and basically left it alone.

Fast forward 3 months later... and this is the result 😍😍

What do you guys think? Have you ever tried propagating this way?

Welcome to my little grow light jungle!

The crew is slowly waking up and climbing again, and I’m pretty sure a few of these vines grew an inch the moment the light turned on.

Let’s see who the real plant nerds are...

How many plants can you correctly name in this photo?

There are a few climbers, some
chunky leaves, and at least one that thinks it’s the main character.

Happy Friday! Getting your peonies to bloom after the first year of planting is super exciting and if you are like me and obsessed with them you might want to keep all the blooms but since it’s her first year is better to chop them off so she can focus her energy on growing her roots ☺️
