At first I was upset that about the descision to not show Dorothy’s face in Wicked but I’m happy that it gave me the opportunity to interprete her how I see her. Her presence is so recognizable that it transcends the need for her face to even be shown. Pretty iconic right? Since my curiosity to about her was so strong I knew it’d be fun to imagine her personality and give her the spotlight! Her costume may be overlooked, but it is beautifully designed head to toe, the different layers of the pinafore create that instantly recognizable silhouette. Chefs kiss! And so recreating it and the gingham fabric was so exciting to me, I had the best time at the sewing machine ever😁

This week we opened Crafting Character: The Costumes of Paul Tazewell at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

I knew it would be an emotional moment to cut the ribbon — but I didn’t expect to see hundreds of young people immediately lined up, waiting to walk through the exhibit. That was overwhelming in the best way.

My hope is that this exhibition, which shares my life, work, and creative process, sparks curiosity and possibility for the next generation of creative thinkers — whether their path leads them toward art, science, or something in between.

I’m deeply grateful to the extraordinary team at the Museum of Science and Industry who built this experience alongside me and my co-curator, Rachel V. Ivey. From gallery design and costume presentation to lighting, media, script, project management, and the educational programming still to come and the Paul Tazewell Design pop up in the museum store!!! - their care and attention to detail made this a truly multidimensional experience.

I hope you’ll visit more than once — there is so much to see, feel, and discover.

A few reflections in celebration of Ian Wallace and his remarkable team — including Ella McEwan — who created Glinda’s wedding dress for #Wicked: For Good.

This is a defining moment in the story, and the costume needed to carry that sense of ceremony. As Glinda moves through the Hall of Grandiosity and down the steps, her gown echoes the quiet grandeur of historic royal weddings — seemingly simple in shape, yet full of meaning.

Her 25-meter veil, topped with a crystallized butterfly tiara, is edged with dimensional butterflies that trace the hem and rise around her. We leaned into the symbolism of metamorphosis — a reminder of transformation, emergence, and new beginnings.
The skirt is built from layers of tulle, nylon net, and silk organza, and the asymmetrical bodice, though understated, is set with stones and sequins placed one by one.

It was a joy to collaborate with artisans who brought such care and precision to every detail. Their craft is felt in every movement of this dress. #CelebrateTheMakers
