Introducing William Thomas @abstractwill the fourth of our four current #SyncingSpace @SyncThinking UK/Singapore residents who has studio space at home and also with @RocketArts in Brighton.

Will joined Syncing Space sharing his determination to be part of this residency on equitable terms with flair and fun but also serious reflection and dedication to exploring arts leadership on his terms. Through this residency, we’ve seen Will enhance his way of expressing the vital change in attitudes needed in the ‘arts world’ slapping away unwanted interference working alongside animator, Dave Packer @sheep_films

Introducing @gracecurrieart - the third of our four current #SyncingSpace @SyncThinking residents who has studio space at home.

She joins Syncing Space with generous support from @dashdisabilityarts and is a bit of a firework with ‘bursts of energy but also ‘fizzling out’.

She reminds us that highs and lows of being a disabled artist and that is ‘just how it is’. Grace you are brill, you light up our skies!

Over the past few weeks, Grace has hosted an open studio and this way of influencing sits at the heart of her practice that longs for connection and joy.

Initially trained as printmaker, deaf artist Raymond Fuyana @raymond_fuyana is a self-taught painter whose surrealist compositions, rich with intricate detail and bold imagery, showcase his mastery as a draughtsman.

Fuyana creates a world where imagination intertwines with reality, a place where past, present, and future collide. His dreamscapes take us on a journey through a life shaped by a heightened perception and a profound sensitivity to the visual world. This pictorial universe is one of porous boundaries: between inside and outside, urban and rural, day and night, past and present.

Gravity gives way to the freedom to imagine. Architectural fragments dissolve into lush African landscapes, gravity-defying forms drift through open windows, and vibrant colors infuse every detail with wonder and emotion. Doorways, windows and references to chess and gaming mediate between space and time, but also represent chance, playfulness and forms of access or participation which Fuyana is often denied.

Raymond Fuyana relocated from Zimbabwe to South Africa in 2009 to attend the St Vincent’s School for the Deaf, where he learned Sign Language. He later studied printmaking at the Artist Proof Studio. Fuyana has exhibited in multiple group shows, and has presented solo exhibitions at both Guns & Rain (2024) and Duende Art Projects @duendeartprojects, Belgium (2023, 2025).

His work has been shown in solo presentations at 1-54 London (2023), Art Joburg (2024) and in "Strategic Interplay: African Art and Imagery in Black and White", an exhibition about chess and African art at the Toledo Art Museum @toledomuseum, USA (2024), alongside Brancusi, Ray and Duchamp.

Earlier this year for the first time in over 20 years, I wrote a new poem for a competition. I connected to it immediately and this obviously translated and I was delighted to win first place in the competition.

Our Right to thrive poetry competition and Project Is hosted by disability online.

It's not awareness that dyslexics and Neurodivergent individuals need so much as understanding and complete and utter radical change to what society thinks is reasonable...

10 Minutes Easy

It should take you 10 minutes
I just spent four hours
Doing a thing you asked me to do
But It look like lazy
I feel like stupid to you

It should take you 10 minutes
A thing so excruciatingly hard
It bends my body to hurt
My head being swollen
My heart, put on guard

It should take you 10 minutes
I am battered by your voice
Expanded and exhausted
Thoughts leave me cold
Fear leaves me no choice

We’re deep into our 4th online #SyncingSpace international residency @syncthinking for artists with learning disability and autism to find and define their arts leadership.

This week and next we’re going to focus on our 4 brilliant artists in residence but firstly throwing light on our first ‘in studio’ session exploring choice of colour as it relates to who we are as artists and how we lead, facilitated by co-programme leader, the wonderful, Thompson Hall and @tanyasartstudios. Whose Benefit?

So whose pockets get lined?
Not mine for sure.
The pockets of ‘hardworking people’? Well, I work hard
Just to get from this day to the next then to the next
Then to the next. I work hard in a society that makes
My life an uphill struggle; I am not inactive economically or
Otherwise and yet in this new national sport
Of disabled bashing that’s gained in momentum
For the past two decades you say that I am.
You say that I’m a skiver and a scrounger
And a shirker and a faker and you empty my pockets
To give to the rich. My well of resources is deep and
Has to get deeper to fight your lies and discrimination.
You impoverish my life further to enrich the lives of the already
Obscenely rich, to fight wars I didn’t vote for,
To support tyrants. You’re the tyrant, all of you.
You’re the tyrants that sit on your benches, jeering,
Passing an assisted dying bill that you don’t need because
You’re trying to kill me anyway. I tell you this, I won’t go quietly.
I will not go gentle into that good night.
It is not my time to say goodnight and I will fight you
Tooth and nail, and I will shout from the rooftops
That I can no longer climb upon, but nonetheless

Metaphorically I’m there, Speaker’s Corner and a soapbox,
Better than a cardboard box under a railway bridge.
I’m here and I have pen and paper, I have a voice and
I have a right. It is not my benefit. It is my right.

Announcing the Neurodivergent Artist Network and Taster session.

Are you a neurodivergent artist or creative in the Midlands? BACKLIT Gallery and @dashdisabilityarts are launching something for you 👀

The Neurodivergent Artist Network (NAN) is a new programme where you can meet other neurodivergent artists, hear from established practitioners and talk openly about making work and navigating the visual arts sector.

NAN takes place primarily online with an opportunity to meet in person at BACKLIT Gallery for the final session.

You’ll have opportunities to get feedback on your work and ideas, ask questions about approaching galleries, and share experiences with people who may be navigating some of the same things.

To help you find out more before committing, we’re launching a free taster session on Zoom:

On Wednesday 8 July, the Young Disabled Artists programme supported by DASH @dashdisabilityarts came to an end with the final workshop and evening celebration at Wysing Arts Centre. A sensory trail showcased the work made by the young people in collaboration with @louiseashcroft1 during the sessions 🪐🌈

During a warm evening, friends and family of the young people were led through the grounds at Wysing Arts Centre to find interactive sculptures and installations that explored sensory play and storytelling.

A huge thank you to Cambridgeshire Sensory Support team for continued your support, enthusiasm and generosity throughout this collaborative programme.

This week, we have the pleasure of welcoming artist Milly Aburrow (@portfolio.milly) and two students (Bethany and Caroline) from @uni_southampton to the team!⁠

Together, they'll make or adapt tools to support Milly's artistic practice, but that's not all! The tools and artwork will be displayed in an exhibition curated by Jess as part of the Future Curators Programme. ⁠

We’re looking for a Producer to deliver the Transform National & Fair + Equitable Programme.

This is an exciting opportunity to help deliver a national programme that invests in the next generation of Executive Directors while supporting visual arts organisations to build more inclusive leadership, stronger workplace cultures and equitable organisational practice.

Working across communications, partnerships, stakeholder engagement, administration and programme delivery, you’ll play a key role in shaping the visibility and impact of this ambitious partnership between CVAN England, New Art Exchange and DASH.

✨ 3 days per week

✨ £43,000 total for two year contract (24 months)
