Two days after our report with @publiccitizentx, TCEQ shut down STEERS, its e-filing system, "to ensure all applications are reviewed by agency staff to determine if they are related to data centers." After our investigation, it has also suspended 17 data center approvals issued after Gov. Abbott's Sept 21 order to halt data center permits.

On October 19th, the day we published our report, TCEQ's interim director wrote to the Governor that the agency had paused. Yet that very same day, TCEQ approved a concrete batch plant at the Stargate campus in Abilene. Its own record names the site "OPEN AI," and the directions say to turn at the "OPEN AI DATA CENTER ENTRANCE." These are just straight up permits for data center construction in the midst of a pause that was ordered by the Governor. TCEQ has now suspended it.

These were regulatory approvals that allowed construction on over 5.9 square miles of land across Texas, at Stargate sites in Abilene and Milam County, Google, Amazon Web Services, QTS, and Chevron's Project Kilby, a 2.67 gigawatt gas plant being built to power a Microsoft data center. We don't know if these data centers are complying with the suspensions. TCEQ needs to send inspectors to make sure they are.

Raleigh’s city council approved a six-month moratorium on data centers this week. However, Raleigh resident Zainab Baloch and other community members gathered prior to the vote and called for a 32-month pause on new data centers, arguing more time is needed for the community to make its voice heard.⁣

On Tuesday, Raleigh joined over 50 local governments across North Carolina in passing a moratorium on data centers.⁣

We return from 3 days in Gonzales at Come and Take It, with our hearts full and inspired. Thank you so much to the Water Protection Association for letting us work with you at your booth and all the work you do to protect the precious water of the Carrizo Wilcox Aquifer from greedy hands. Thank you @data.center.action.coalition for supplying us with pamphlets and printed materials to warn our neighbors of the detrimental effects data centers have on rural communities like ours. Thank you to @claytontuckertx and team for joining us Saturday. It’s so inspiring to see y’all listening to our communities and standing out here, shoulder to shoulder with us pushing back. Thank you to the city of Gonzales for having us. Thank you to all the volunteers who decorated our float and stood in the rain and shine working our booth for 3 days.
