“When I recently heard the news that the Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies would be closing in June 2025 due to the donor and university decisions, I was devastated. Much of my intellectual development, from my undergraduate career at UC Berkeley to becoming a graduate student at San Francisco State, was shaped by the Center and the people who work there.

Nearly five years ago, when I was undergraduate student at UC Berkeley majoring in English, I helped run the Iranian-American student publication, ‘Perspective Magazine.’ Persis (Dr. Persis Karim, who has been the Center’s director since it was established) reached out to our organization and me personally, and encouraged UC Berkeley students to attend the SF State conference, ‘40 Years and More Conference,’ in 2019, which was, for me and many others, a ‘world-altering experience.’ It was the first time in my life that I was surrounded by countless professors, scholars, artists, and thinkers who were invested in research on or related to Iran or Iranians, particularly in the context of the global Iranian diaspora,” writes Azar Hatefi Fellow, Donna Fotoohi, in her recent reflection for our “With A Trace” blog. Donna is pictured on the right with her peers, Hasti Jafari (far left) and Taylor Nasim Stone (middle).

The piece, titled, “Reflections on the Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies and its Influence on Donna Fotoohi’s Intellectual Path,” is available to read in full through the link in our bio, or at bit.ly/fotoohi24.

Join us for our end-of-the-year in person Communi-tea on May 15th for a celebration of SF State graduates and retiring friends! The staff of the Center are so frequently moved by the community we’ve built here at SF State over the past six years. We are so grateful for our friends at the Poetry Center, Steve Dickison and Elise Ficarra, as well as Emily Beitiks Smith, the Director of the Longmore Center for Disability Studies. We also have many wonderful faculty who have been affiliated with the Center or have directly participated in some of the Center’s work! We are also grateful for the many students who have come and gone throughout the years, who have served as research assistants, film production assistants, and collaborators on our projects. This year we want to honor our fine colleagues and a number of wonderful students, some of whom will be retiring and graduating this spring. Please save the date for an in-person tea and sweets celebration on Wednesday May 15, 1:30-3:00 PM, in Humanities 503 at SFSU. We’ll have tea and sweets, and we’ll also be having a raffle of some of our favorite books of poetry and fiction!
