“When Lyell and I started this 2 years ago, we wanted to get new media artists in a room together.” - Torin at DATLAB 16

Torin, Lyell & Xuelong kick off @datlabnyc night sixteen: what happens when you get every music-tech nerd/new-media artist in one room and let the collaborations happen on their own.

“Electrons repel each other... so how can they touch?”

Yan Shao on the quantum side of her practice - our first reel in a series on her “electron_matter” piece. A short experimental film built to make quantum physics felt rather than explained, starting with a single electron alone in the void: uncertain, unstable, meeting only itself before it ever becomes part of an atom.

“It only exists when your eyes are closed.”

k0j0 on unconscious friction: once a system becomes too affirming, it shapes behavior below the threshold of perception. AI sycophancy is the live example. porous, their subliminal earworm machine, is the demonstration.

“At the Salton Sea, the white beaches are not made of sand... but of layers of shells, bones, and salt.”

Yan Shao on the salt-shaped side of her practice - walking through two projects on disappearing bodies of water: Lived In A Sea, a website built as a monument to the barnacle shells accumulating along the Salton Sea shoreline, and left to feel that wind, her ITP thesis, a customized CNC water-dripping system that slowly traces the receding border of the Great Salt Lake.

“What if the interface is not a window, nor a door, but a scar?”

k0j0 open with a SUPER REAL product launch - Gradi Vox, an AI wearable that only speaks when you speak - and let it hijack the presentation from there. How can care, empathy and good intentions harden into cognitive conditioning, and why friction is the last honest thing an interface can offer you.

“The creative power of darkness and the suggestive nature of the unknown.”

Sam Price on Boxels – his just-finished Parsons MFA thesis, a display system that doesn’t just depict material reality but participates in it through illumination, kinetics, and physical presence. Built for installation and live-performance spaces, so the work reacts to the visitor instead of sitting divorced from them on a stage.
