The Portrait in Relief with Eugene Daub

Capture likeness and spirit in a fresh, unlabored way with this invaluable 4-day sculptural portraiture workshop! Eugene will demonstrate how to use every stage of the process to enhance the final portrait, guiding students through creating a plaster mold that offers the opportunity to refine and enhance the piece.

From this mold, several options are possible, including a fired ceramic clay cast or a plaster cast. Eugene will also demonstrate the process of adding names or wording to the relief — a rare opportunity to learn this remarkable art form from one of the pioneers and leaders in the field!

Eugene Daub studied at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Alfred University in New York. He won the Arthur Ross Award from the Institute of Classical Architecture and Classical America, and has received awards in figurative and bas-relief sculpture from the American Numismatic Society and the American Numismatic Association. His work is held in institutions including the British Museum and the Smithsonian Institution.

Meet American contemporary sculptor Eugene Daub.

Mr. Daub talks about his process and inspiration for the statue of Gen. Schriever, which everyone who visits LAAFB sees during their visit on base. Daub’s other works can be seen in various places across the USA, including the bronze Rosa Parks statue, co-designed with Rob Firmin, permanently located in the National Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol, at Washington D.C.

“Daub’s monument highlights something more. It emphasizes equal collaboration and agency among its subjects, consciously countering historical hierarchies and power imbalances rooted in colonialism.”

I love to learn!!! I love learning through my own process, learning through practice, exploration, and error, but I really love a good ol' fashion class! Had the honor to be in an intense medallic portrait class led by the phenomenally brilliant Eugene Daub, @daubeugene. It's been a pleasure to meet and learn from some of my artistic heroes! And a huge thank you to Brookgreen Gardens, @brookgreen_gardens and their master sculpture programs. Curious if some of you stretch to take classes on things that excite, inspire, and further your studio work? I'd also love to hear from you all about some of your artistic heroes.

This sculpture titled Personages, San Pedro is heading to the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. It is part of the historic renovation of the hotel and the artwork has been curated by the incomparable Simon de Pury @simondepury It’s final home will be in the Winter Garden.

I have included a sketch by my sculptor friend @daubeugene for a pedestal that will be built by the installers to go under the sculpture to hide the steel bases and take it 4 inches off the floor for cleaning.

They were picked up from my studio in San Pedro (Los Angeles) by Kevin at OC Crating in Long Beach where they will be crated and shipped to New York.

The initial contact by @depury Gallery was in July of 2021. Sometimes at takes a long time for a sale to come through. Thank you to @wonzimer for making it happen.
