I
Thank you @tylerperry and @tylerperrystudios - what I have learned in just the past week #mindblown #NEXTLEVEL

Been digesting this opportunity that was realized a few days back - I have applied to so many creative labs/incubators and been rejected by like all of them 🤪(close just not close enough) …

To have folks/industry professionals outside of my Tribe see Value in my Craft - feels kinda cool and I am pinching myself 🤩

We all just need one YES!!!

So as I go on to the next round of this fellowship - I will excitedly receive all the positive vibes and encouragement from y’all in my village 🫶🏿🎥 🎭

A few years ago I logged an insane number of steps walking in circles around the Fox lot. It was about collective bargaining, but what I was lucky to get out if it personally was a special group of folks who will always be close to my heart. And when things got a little dark for us lately they banded together to shine a little light our way. Vivien Jastrzebski was the ringleader for this amazing group and together they delivered a gift we won’t soon forget, because the gift was more than just dinner, it was love. And we are feeling it tonight with stomachs full. Thanks to you all. 🩷

MONSTERS Behind the Scenes

I’ve always loved Behind the scenes featurettes for movies and TV, so here’s my last one for Monsters.

From filming on location at a beautiful old house, to filming in the courtroom filled with actors and craftsmen, to filming Top Gun-esque beach volleyball scenes on the final day of production- working on Monsters, the friendships I’ve made through the show, and the whole experience has been one of my great joys of 2024 and my career so far. Here’s to 2024, let’s get it 2025!

MONSTERS: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is out now on @netflix.

Truly grateful and honored to have worked on my first Co-Starring role as Griffin Dunne on Episode 7 of Ryan Murphy’s poignant series. A huge thank you to my team @cleartalentgroup and also @ryanmurphyproductions, all of whom saw me fit for this role.

The veteran actor Nathan Lane, portraying Dominick Dunne, took the time to meet with me and some of the cast before set to grasp the tragedy that the Dunne family faced in 1982. What a masterclass to have worked alongside Nathan Lane and my fellow cast members, the incredible crew, writer David McMillan(@davemcm22) and director Michael Uppendahl for this episode!

Meet the 4 Half PA mentees who worked on @monstersnetflix this summer through our PA Intensive program.

Kendra Copeland
I was on set with diverse individuals who led with distinct creativity, kindness, and efficiency. Half Initiative Program streamlines breaking into the entertainment industry and gives opportunities to historically marginalized voices.
I learned a great deal from watching [director Max Winkler], his warmth, confidence, and domain over the work. He was constantly excited to answer questions, share his love of filmmaking, and was always profoundly attentive to his responsibilities as a director. He gave me a blueprint of how I’d like to lead a set as a working director.

Erin Clement
Seeing Production Supervisor, Caroline Mescon, works effortlessly to ensure we had a safe and productive day of shooting was one of the best benefits of being on both set and the office. @cmescon

Luca Leggieri
The AD team welcomed me with open arms and taught me everything they knew in the office and on set. I was able to meet one of the writers, David [McMillan], where I was able to pick his brain on writing for shows similar to Monster(s) and share my future career plans.

David Lu
The highlight of my time in the Half-Initiative was by far being able to work with Randy [Wolff] and his movie picture car team. Him and his team were some of the most amiable, hard working, and professional crew I’ve ever worked with.

I love this outfit so much, I looked like my mom (like the first memories I have of her) ❤️
Thank you @lindamcalistertalent (and Jacki) and @tlynntalent (and Melia) for being by my side during this journey. Thank you CD @josheinsohn and @tlcnyc for giving me the opportunity to audition for FLOR and for all the new auditions you have sent my way. Gracias

It was a joy to be on set and meet @maradcasey who was so nice to me (those eyes made me feel seen).

I had a chance to introduce myself to comedy icon @vickilawrence_official and tell her I was so excited to “perform” in front of her. When the director said cut she stood up, clap and said Great performance Vanessa. She made my day 👏 (she remembered my name 🤩) and if you watch her monologue you will realized why she’s an icon.

I got to work with two amazing directors Carl Franklin and Michael Uppendahl who made me feel confident, too confident I even mentioned I do crossfit 🤣

I got to meet writer/producer @davemcm22 and shared my culture with him. He’s brilliant.

And guess what? @ryanmurphyproductions got some “Dulces Zamoranos”. Thanks Tarin (AD).

Lastly, when I entered to set @pauladelstein said hi to me and what did I say? I love you on Practice Private 🤦‍♀️ . Thanks for the nod.

I might be exaggerating but I think there was like 80 people in that room looking at me. I would never forget I made you laugh 🙏 that makes all the tears and frustration so worth it.

Thank you to all the cast and crew of MONSTERS. I learned a lot from you. What an impeccable group of people.

Gracias @irandaniel por alegrarte tanto por mi y recordarme quien soy. (La verdadera yo 🤭)

And to all of you who read this long post, I wish you a journey full of success.

With so much love and gratitude
Vanessa Lua

PS: even my walk got me compliments 😁

A huge thank you to my sister @maryaminthecity for helping me create the #sofreh. It took us over a year to collect the items and put them together. Most items were family heirlooms including my grandfather’s poetry books and the rest were made with my sister’s hands. 🩵
