So why are we back?

Last year I was doing a studio session and Mike dropped by to say hello. We started talking about an unfinished song he and Dave wrote around the time we recorded “The Solution” in 2010. I said, “How cool would it be to finally put real drums on it… and have Erik bring it to life vocally?”

A few coffee meetings later ☕️
Studio booked.
Game on.

We tracked drums at the beautiful @armourystudios here in Vancouver 🇨🇦 with my brother Jason (who recorded “The Solution”) capturing it all once again. Full circle moment.

About the song…

⏱ 25 minutes long.
🤯 As prog as it gets.
⌛️ Time signatures.
⚡️ Tempo changes.
🎶 Technical passages.
🥁 Groove throughout.
🎤 And Erik bringing melody and depth that takes it to another level.

I split it into 5 parts.
Friday load-in.
Saturday sound design + Part 1.
Sunday Parts 2–5.

It was intense. Ideas evolving in real time. Learning sections on the spot and hitting record. This is why I always teach my students to improvise, you never know when you’ll be called to step up in the studio.

I’m beyond stoked about the drum sound and the takes we captured. My @sonordrumco SQ2 was recorded beautifully. Big thanks to my brother, Jay! Beyond grateful for ALL the gear I endorse and get to play/record with 🙏❤️🥁

Now Dave, Mike and Erik will take it across the finish line.

Had a great catch up with Mr. @davetyoung (Devin Townsend Project Guitarist) yesterday. He was in Vancouver getting some tattoo work done and hit me up. We got together before my Sunday Rehearsal and caught up on life, music and more, including some funny DTP tour stories over the years. Good memories with this dude!

Dave’s kickin’ ass as always and doing well in Victoria, BC. We even talked about getting some new Ten Ways music out in the future, among other stuff. Good times with good people!

Hevy Devy Christmas

I purchased this at a show in Toronto over 10 years ago. I feel extremely lucky to have seen the band at least once. Those initial four DTP records were life changing for me. Thank you to all of those talented folks that had a part in those albums.

A bunch of reunions last night at the @gojiraofficial and @korn_official concert at the Tacoma Dome just south of Seattle. I posted a pic yesterday of myself with @beavenlight, @davetyoung and @mikestjean before heading to this show. Was so great hanging with my brothers from the Devin Townsend Project.

We then got to see our old touring mates from Gojira destroy the Tacoma Dome. They killed it like they always do. Killer production, killer sound, and their performance is always top-notch. Absolutely blown away. Korn was the same. It brought me back many years, listening to the tunes they were playing last night. We got to the venue late, so sadly, we missed @spiritboxmusic. I hope to see them live one day soon.

Afterwards, we hung out for a few hours with the Gojira camp (band and crew) and our buddy @nlimsang. It was so nice to catch up on so many things with everyone. We’ve known these guys over 10 years and Mr. @coys1972 was my drum tech in the Devin Townsend project for years…. We’ve known him personally since our first tour as DTB in 2003. Needless to say it was an epic hang out and a lot of catching up and a ton of road stories and endless laughs were had, along with a few beers 🍻 I wasn’t feeling too hot this morning 😂 HUGE thanks to our great friend and Gojira TM @killer_bongley for the great hookups!

The Project (if you know, you know 😉) reunited and together once again 🤘❤️🤘

Always great to hang with these guys…. @beavenlight, @davetyoung and @mikestjean. They’re family. We’ve been through a ton together over the past couple decades. Touring the world playing concerts and festivals, making music, making friends, being tourists, and most of all making rad memories, laughing our asses off and accomplishing some big musician dreams with the awesome and talented @dvntownsend as the Devin Townsend Band and then the Devin Townsend Project. Good times with awesome friends…..

Lastly, thanks to ALL of you fans worldwide who supported us over the years, it wasn’t possible without you guys and your amazing support 🙏🤘🙏

Un día como hoy en 2012, el 18 de Septiembre, @insideoutmusic lanzaba el 5to album de estudio del que fue otro proyecto del señor @dvntownsend hablamos de Devin Townsend Project. Banda que estaría enfocada a ampliar el descubrimiento musical del canadiense, y explorar todos los tipos de Metal, Rock, Pop, música en general pero con el sello característico del maestro multifacético Devin. Un disco que pasa tanto por el Progressive, el Death, Heavy Metal, el Rock, el Pop, el Country, lo ambiental, Gospel, Groove, Tecno, etc... éste hombre sigue creando cosas que nos recuerdan en partes a temas del "Ghost" o hasta el "Addicted!", incluso el "Ocean Machine" pero siempre identificando cada tema dentro del álbum al que pertenece. No es fácil de digerir el disco si esperas solo una cosa, acá, te sorprendes porque no sabes (si aún no lo haz escuchado) como empezará, o terminará. Cómo dato curioso: el título del album tiene una doble lectura, el primer significado se inspiró en los muchos viajes en avión que él y la banda hicieron durante la gira, cuando Townsend notó lo genial que pensaba que era que estuvieran por encima de las nubes, 'epi-cloud', mientras que el segundo proviene del contenido musical de el álbum en sí, "épico y ruidoso". Otro favorito dentro de su discografía de éste proyecto ya inexistente. Escucha obligada ya! 🍻🇨🇦🧑🏻‍🦲🎸🌎

Sep 09, 2016 @dvntownsend launched the album #transcendence just a #masterpiece at it’s best, the #drum performance was done by the Canadian man Mr @ryanvanpoederooyen #rvp just one of his best drum works, do yourself a favor an go listen this album…..

Transcendence by the Devin Townsend Project is 8 years old today. I saw @dvntownsend post about it today. I normally don’t post album anniversaries BUT this album is my favourite out of the many albums I recorded for Devin with the Devin Townsend Project and Devin Townsend Band. It’s definitely one of my favourite albums I’ve ever had the pleasure of recording in my career to date.

I feel Transcendence captured the DTP at our very best. it was our final album and we grew and developed as a band over many years, which helped. All the other albums, we recorded and toured world-wide we’re awesome as well, I’m proud of them all, but Transcendence was something special. I don’t feel there’s one bad song on that album.

Devin has always been a phenomenal song writer, producer and player in everything he’s done to date… he’s also a great human being. But this album, City (SYL)and Ocean Machine are at the top of my list from his extensive catalogue. Personally, this album pushed me in many positive ways and helped me become an even better player/songwriter.

Huge thanks to Devin for trusting me, pushing my boundaries in a positive way with my drumming and having me on board as his drummer for the DTP/DTB for over 16 years. I learned so much from Dev in music and in life. It was an honour. Wishing Dev continued success in everything he does!

Big thanks to @beavenlight, @davetyoung and @mikestjean for being awesome band mates and people. Also big thanks to all the crew and management we had. It was a great team. A family. Wish them well in all they do.

Even though the DTP ended… I don’t think we could have ended it on a better note. What an album Transcendence is!
