I’m Fully Alive.

I’m a bit late 😅, but wanted to celebrate my friend @dawnmannsanders ‘s 60th Birthday 🎉 by honoring this really thoughtful request…

Instead of a gathering or giving gifts, Dawn invited us to reflect on times we’ve felt fully alive + post an unpolished, real life moment of gratitude.

This simple prompt reminded m.e. that life is to be celebrated. Every breath has meaning, each step makes a difference + restful movement does more for the mind and body than we often give it credit. ☺️🍂 In this picture, I’m enjoying a brisk afternoon walk in this gorgeous *almost* fall weather, while zoning out to a novel on Audible 📖🎧.

I’m fully alive at 54! (Just shy of my double-nickel 🎂two weeks ago 😁)

My friend Dawn Mann-Sanders asked a question in celebration of her 60th birthday.

She didn’t ask for gifts or a flood of birthday cards. She asked instead, that her friends answer this question:

So I began to scroll and stopped here—at these photos.

I’d gone to visit my friend Leigh Ann @llooyenga who was diagnosed with ALL Leukemia in January. Miraculously and with the help of modern medicine, she is now cancer free and halfway through her immunotherapy.

One might think it’d be a time tainted by sickness, frail bodies, and the grief of an unrequested season. (And for sure that would have been an understandable experience.)

But no.

Here, walking around the lake @thebroadmoor , connecting with my dear friend over another chapter and hope that’s woven into every today, I felt fully alive.

Your suitcase is half-packed.

Your proposal is half-finished.

And your heart is fully undone.

You keep opening the registration email and closing it again.

This is what attending a conference while grieving actually looks like—standing in the doorway between calling and capacity, wondering if you should even go.

I know the grief math you’re doing: I’ll come when I’m stronger, when my proposal feels ready, my pitch sounds polished, and my confidence finally catches up with my calling.

I want to talk to you. Yeah, you—the one arriving unfinished. Maybe you’re grieving. Maybe you’re burned out, or somewhere in the middle of a transition you didn’t choose. Maybe you just don’t feel like you belong in a room full of people with platforms and book deals and answers.

Let me tell you what they don’t print on the welcome packet: you’re allowed to be here broken. You don’t have to show up healed and whole to claim your seat. You just have to show up.

Had the sweetest time with my fellow @ivpress author friend Dawn @dawnmannsanders ❤️!

The past several years have been full of turning online connections into real-life friendships, and it’s been such a gift.

Through writing and podcasting, I’ve met some incredible people, and every time I’ve had the opportunity to connect, it feels like we’ve known each other forever. It has been refreshing, soul-filling, and a reminder of God’s kindness.

Grateful for you, Dawn. Thank you for inviting me to spend time with you while you were in town. Thanks for signing my copies of your beautiful book “When Your World Ends: God’s Creative Process for Rebuilding a Life.” So excited for all that’s ahead! ❤️

I am calling this Essential Conversations-real talk about what we often carry quietly. I wanted to start with grief.

It’s been 4 years since Michael’s passing. We were married 33 years.

I’ve learned something that’s not said enough: time doesn’t “fix” grief. Time teaches you how to carry it and even then, some days are heavy.

I was inspired to finally press record after seeing @salina_sincerely share the her journey after losing her husband. She shared how time hasn’t healed her grief. That struck a chord!

If you’re grieving, I just want you to know: you’re not strange, or weak and you’re not behind!
