Some favourite shots from our Vancouver Pride show at the Commodore Ballroom. There is really nothing like that stage, that room, and a Pride crowd ready to sing along. @dsfoto.ca

Hi friends! Psyched to announce that my debut for Cellar Music Group is on the ballot this year for Alternative Jazz Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards! This album is a tribute to the master and innovator of jazz, funk and the possibilities of the saxophone, Mr. Eddie Harris. Appropriately (especially for a Canadian leader!) the album is called ‘EH!’ and we would be very honoured if you would give it a listen. Thank you so much for your consideration, NARAS voting friends, and long live the music of Eddie Harris! A huge part of the jazz tradition is celebrating those who came before. VanJazz features a number of tributes, celebrations, and homages that both look backwards and lead us forwards. October 15 at @af.vancouver Alliance Française Vancouver, some of Vancouver's finest improvisers celebrate the life and music of pianist Paul Plimley. October 16 at the @revuestagetheatre on Granville Island, the mighty VEJI re-forms to play the music of Hugh Fraser. For two nights at @frankiesjazz October 23 & 24, we look back on the release Thankfully, by the Ross Taggart Quartet. This release was the first on @cellarlive and the original group members reunite in celebration. It's been 20 years since Amy Winehouse's Back to Black rocketed up the charts, and Krystle Dos Santos pays tribute at the @rickshawtheatre October 17. The next night, October 18, Dawn Pemberton will perform the groundbreaking R&B of D'Angelo, also at the Rickshaw. @tyrantstudios.yvr hosts an evening of celebration of Horace Silver, featuring not one but two stellar flautists: Jeremy Price & Bill McBirnie October 19. On October 21, Tyrant also presents an evening of the music of Thelonious Monk featuring pianist Stanley Zhang. Dawn Pemberton is at it again, this time at the TELUS studio theatre at @chancentreubc October 24, where she'll pay homage to the first ladies of jazz. Finally, drummer Arvind Ramdas leads a quartet that features saxophonist Cory Weeds in a joint presentation with @viffest that features the groundbreaking indie jazz film The Connection as well as a concert. Visit the links in our bio for tickets and more info.

Dawn Pemberton is one of Vancouver's most versatile vocalists, equally at home with Jazz, R&B, Soul, and Funk. There's TWO chances to see her this festival in wildly different contexts. Why not catch both? October 18, she takes on the music of R&B legend D'Angelo at The Rickshaw with her super funky band, The Brown Sugar, led by keyboardist @jonnytobinmusic. Then on October 24, she'll pay tribute to her jazz foremothers in a special concert at the @chancentreubc saluting the first ladies of Jazz. Tickets and info in our bio!

If singers make your heart sing, we have you covered. There's terrific variety to be found in the www.van-jazz.ca program! • Dawn Pemberton has TWO big shows! October 18, she'll perform the music of soul/R&B pioneer D'Angelo with her very hot band, The Brown Sugar at The Rickshaw Theatre. October 24, she pays tribute to the first ladies of jazz at the TELUS Studio Theatre at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. • Krystle Dos Santos performs October 17 at the Rickshaw, performing Amy Winehouse's Back to Black and more in celebration of that album's 20 year anniversary. • Maryna Krut appears October 24, as Capilano University Centre for the Performing Arts presents Ukrainian singer and bandura virtuoso Maryna Krut. • Steve Maddock and his Quintet will pay tribute to Tony Bennett at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts on October 15. • Montreal singer Isabella Hallia performs at Frankie's Jazz Club on October 18. • For a different flavour, try Tyrant Studios on October 20 as vocalist/flutist Alex Hamburger and pianist José Luiz Martins collaborate to create a unique musical language. • Mimosa, who delight Vancouver audiences with their French-flavoured jazz, play Frankie's on October 15. • Finally, there are SIX nights of vocal music at Apollo's on the Drive. It's a smorgasbord of local vocal talent!

Many cities across this fair country of ours have dedicated and awesome blues festivals (I had the privilege of playing at a bunch of them this summer!) and we got to wondering – why isn’t there a blues festival in Vancouver? Coming up with no good reason, we decided we should start one! So we are very excited to present to you the first of many Vancouver Winter Blues Fests! The inaugural edition is 2 days at the Wise Hall – Fri Dec 4th & Sat Dec 5th, and we have what we think is a pretty great lineup with a pretty liberal reading of what “blues” is. We are a big tent! Night 1 — Friday, Dec 4 * Secondhand Dreamcar (Edmonton) – @secondhanddreamcar * Honeybear, the Band (Vancouver) – @honeybear_the_band * Sinéad X Sanders (Vancouver) – @sineadxsanders Night 2 — Saturday, Dec 5 * The Harpoonist (Vancouver Island) – @theharpoonist * Dawn Pemberton B3 Quartet (Vancouver) – @dawnpemberton * Marcus Trummer (Calgary) – @marcustrummermusic Tickets on sale now!
