When ‘Being There’ Isn’t Enough: The Fight for Language Access.

"I am Deaf. ASL is my first language: the language I think and dream in."

For Deaf patients and people with limited English proficiency, communication barriers can compromise informed consent, medication instructions, diagnoses, and follow-up care.

Language access is not optimal. It is patient safety.

Read Josiah Morrow’s (@josiahmo15) powerful perspective on why qualified interpreters, trained providers, and patien #LanguageAccess #languageaccess t-centered communication must be built into healthcare from the start in our News & Events section on our site.

Scholar Spotlight: Jade Centeno!

Congratulations to Cal State DC Scholar Jade Centeno on being featured in Cal Poly Pomona Magazine.

From founding a nonprofit in sixth grade to interning in Washington, DC through the Cal State DC Scholars Program and now serving in the district office of her former fourth-grade teacher, State Assemblywoman Blanca Rubio, Jade has remained deeply committed to leadership, public service, and giving back to her community.

A Political Science student at Cal Poly Pomona, Jade plans to attend law school and pursue a career as an immigration attorney. Her passion for advocacy and service continues to inspire those around her, and we are proud to have been a part of her journey.

We are thrilled to welcome our two summer health policy interns from the Cal State DC Scholars Program.

📌 Josiah Morrow is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Health Administration with a minor in Public Health at California State University, Northridge.

📌 Stefany Lineth Murillo is a senior at California State University, Fullerton, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in both Political Science and Communications with a concentration in Journalism.

As emerging public health and policy leaders, they bring valuable perspectives, enthusiasm, and a shared commitment to advocacy and improving health outcomes. We look forward to the work we will accomplish together and to supporting their continued growth and development.
