You’re gonna have some misses on those big jobs. Listen to your coach, make some adjustments, and try your best the next time! Weightlifting isn’t a sprint, it is a marathon and the best athletes in the world understand that the most.

A weightlifting meet can involve a lot more waiting than lifting.

You may weigh in, eat, wait, warm up, snatch, wait again, warm up again, clean & jerk—and spend hours at the venue for six competition attempts.

That creates a different nutrition problem than simply asking: “What should I eat before I lift?”

You need enough fuel and fluid to stay ready without spending the day feeling overly full. And the only way to learn what that feels like is to practice parts of it.

Your next heavy session can become a small experiment. Bring the drink you think you’ll use. Try the snack you might have between snatch and clean & jerk.

Notice whether you’re hungry, comfortable, thirsty and ready when the bar gets heavy again.

You don’t have to recreate an entire meet. Practice one piece of the day before the day actually matters.
