I'm just gonna say it: I think Math is cool. Equations, angles, geometry, it's all pretty awesome. I married a math teacher, for crying out loud, so you know I mean what I say.

When I'm composing a piece, I break it all down to geometric planes and I love thinking about how the eye travels through a painting, particularly with my alleway pieces. The golden ratio and golden spiral can be useful concepts for mapping that out.

Now I've got a nifty little tool to help me with it. @ddiin_design makes a series of tools for exploring these kinds of relationships, and they kind of blew my mind.

Can't wait to play around with them and see what comes out of it.

Sometimes the best marks appear when you stop trying to be precise.

I picked up the Exlicon L Circle Tool by @ddiin_design Ddiin and simply started playing. Following curves, changing direction, repeating gestures… and suddenly, rhythm took over.

What surprised me most wasn’t the perfect circles—it was the unexpected textures, movement, and unique marks that emerged along the way.

I love discovering tools that invite experimentation instead of perfection.

How would you use it?

➕ Ddiin (@ddiin_design) shows how a simple metal square scale can transform the sketching process. While early concepts often begin with intuitive freehand lines, introducing precise orthogonal guides helps develop clearer geometries, stronger proportions, and more structured spatial ideas without disrupting creativity. It’s a reminder that the tools we choose shape not only our drawings but also the way we think about architecture.

What drawing tool has changed the way you sketch?
