Just in time for #NationalPoetryMonth, the Chicory Revitalization Project’s book, Baltimore's Black Arts Then & Now: Behind the Scenes of a Collaborative Public Humanities Project, is available to order from the University of Iowa Press or your favorite bookseller. Featuring the voices of many of our collaborators and amazing poetry from Baltimore’s past and present, the book examines both the history of Chicory magazine and our efforts to use Chicory as a catalyst for intergenerational dialogue on social justice, race, and place. https://uipress.uiowa.edu/books/baltimores-black-arts-then-now

Baltimore’s Black Arts Then & Now documents our joint effort, in each of our voices, offering (we hope) valuable insights for public historians, educators, and humanists. It includes practical advice and insights for incorporating Chicory, or poetry more generally, into classrooms and other educational spaces.

On April 30 at 7pm, we will hold a virtual book launch, where you'll hear from our contributors. Attendees will be entered into a drawing to win a copy of the book! go.rutgers.edu/chicorybook

If you're in the Baltimore area on May 2 at 1pm, join us for "Between the Lines: Memory, Erasure & Reimagining Baltimore through Chicory," at Red Emma's bookstore.

Last semester the Center for Public History celebrated its 40th anniversary with a keynote address from Dr. Denise Meringolo, the President of the National Council on Public History, where she discussed the history and future of the field. Now available to watch online, CPH invites you to revisit this wonderful talk.

Today is National School Librarian Day, the day when I celebrate that I am officially the luckiest school librarian in the world 🙏🏼‼️🙌🏽 Not only do I have the best assistant, I have the best student library helpers, the best district supervisors, the best Poly colleagues, parents, alumni & administrators, the best community partners, and the best original mentor: Onelee Jakowski‼️She inspired me as a first year teacher at Chinquapin Middle School 27 years ago❤️ I also want to thank Sheila Grap for leading the BCPSS librarians with integrity for so many years; much of what I know, I owe to her. I’d also like to thank my OG partner in crime, Dennis Jutras, for being one of the best collaborative teachers ever through the NHD project and all it has taught me. Such an important day for me to take the opportunity to reflect on how much this career has given me and how lucky I am to have been supported by such beautiful people along the way. Let’s keep this going 🎉🤞🏼🎤#choosegratitude #nationalschoollibrarianday

Professionals Organizations.
They can be helpful. I think it's where I've done a LOT of networking which is crucial as a student and new professional. My first was the BMORE Historic unconference. An unconference is a conference where topics are chosen on the conference day. It promotes hallway conversations over paper presentations. I started as a volunteer and learned a lot about public history in Baltimore. This is a very affordable local conference, and it’s always good to participate in your local public history Association for UNCG members, that is @ncmuseumscouncil

Another major one is Association for African-American Museums. I could go because I had completed a historic interpreters scholarship and gotten trained to be a certified historic interpreter through AAAM. The scholarship required I present in the poster session, so I talked about adding interpretive training to my job in Prince Georges's county. I did speed networking told as many people as possible that I was about to go to graduate school, and things I was interested in pursuing really made the most of my time with these professionals. I’m still a member and attended this conference twice more.

I am very involved in the National Council. I've been to nearly all of their recent conferences and, up until recently, was a member of the advocacy committee. I’ve presented with them I’ve done this speed networking. They are also a very Twitter-heavy organization, so I’ve done a lot of networking with them through Twitter as well. It’s an interesting mix of professionals and academics, which to me has always made it a very friendly organization for students and emerging professionals.

I have never technically been to #AASLH, but my cohort got two awards for Our Aycock exhibit, and so for fun, I convinced @stephfrowe (The executive director of NCPH) to take a picture with my representation

since Covid, it’s been hard to not do in-person conferences for valid safety concerns, but hopefully, we will go back to in-person conferences soon
