My heart is so full after the first Down in the Drafts writing retreat 💖 I can’t express how happy I am this community brought us together. So many funny stories coming out of this weekend 😂 Listening to that eccentric old lady almost get scammed on the train, wandering around a shopping center looking for the Marshall’s, irritating a horny ghost, happening upon the tiniest cemetery making Caitlyn’s eyes turn into literal hearts, recreating a scene to see if the position would work, our Twilight movie marathon, finding a strangely good Thai place in the middle of nowhere, staying up way too late to scream about Theo James, even the chaotic race to the train home. Allow me to introduce some of my cool new friends! Meeting you guys has been a highlight of my year. We each bring such a unique style to the group. Watching you all absolutely KILL it with your writing, editing, querying, social media posts, it gives me so much motivation and inspiration. As someone who struggles with social anxiety, I was hesitant to reach out when Caitlyn made the initial Down in the Drafts call, but I’m so happy I took that step. I wish I had a million dollars to spend at the B&N Preorder sale but alas, we are forced to stick to a budget (and work with my stockpile of saved up gift cards)!! One point I want to make: shopping at indie bookstores whenever possible is incredibly important. Barnes & Noble is a conglomerate that doesn’t need your $$$ (authors still need them, but I try to only make one point at a time) as much as an indie shop does, but it’s still a vital ecosystem for readers in areas where indie shops aren’t as prevalent, and is doing work in keeping brick and mortar stores open at a time when a certain online giant is working to undercut everyone just because they can. Whatever your reason for shopping wherever you shop, keep something in mind: perfection in anything doesn’t exist. Do the most good with what you’ve got. And now!!! There are so many incredible books available for preorder right now, and preorders are so important for authors!
