“They deprived us of so many things that were dear to us. And now we won’t find a place to settle in. We’ve just gone from one displacement to another.”
During the latest escalation of the Israeli war in Lebanon in March 2026, an Israeli airstrike destroyed a building owned by Said and Sanaa’s family. The couple lost their home, which had previously survived prior rounds of Israeli escalation. The family was displaced to Safa Stadium in Beirut, where they all endure immense psychological strain due to severe overcrowding and poor water and sanitation conditions, on top of Said’s lung issues, diabetes, and hypertension. Sanaa shared her grief upon seeing photos of her home turned to rubble – so thoroughly destroyed that searching through the debris for anything to salvage is impossible. Yet, she finds comfort in knowing that her children are safe. For Said, the pain lies in the loss of his family heirlooms, including an antique lantern and traditional harvesting tools that are irreplaceable today. Said and Sanaa’s daughter, displaced alongside them, tries to preserve the traditions she grew up with, like gathering family together during happy occasions, even amid their current reality and complete uncertainty.

During the 2024 escalation of the Israeli war in Lebanon, Nisrine and her husband fled their home on a motorcycle in the early morning.
After nearly 37 hours on the road, they reached a shelter in Beirut, leaving behind a home filled with memories and new kitchenware she never had the chance to use.

“I brought all my memories with me; even my home is in my mind and imagination.”
For Nisrine, home in Seddiqine was built around shared moments with her mother, preparing kishk, za’atar, olives, jams, and mouneh for the year ahead.

In displacement, Nisrine kept part of her home close.
She brought her mouneh to the school-turned-shelter in Jiyeh and created a special place for it, a symbol of memory, continuity, and hope for return.
Nisrine is now back in her village, but she is still unable to return to her home.

After weeks of displacement, southern families returned to their villages this week. Watermelons were there to welcome them.

A rapid damage assessment of buildings in South Lebanon, prepared by the United Nations Development Programme in coordination with the National Council for Scientific Research, found that the direct damage caused by the war amounted to around $1.38 billion.

The findings showed that 11,095 buildings were completely destroyed, affecting 17,891 housing units, while 2,242 buildings (5,219 housing units) were partially damaged. Minor damage was also recorded in 9,311 buildings containing 18,282 residential units.

Aitaroun, in the Bint Jbeil district, topped the list of the worst-hit towns in terms of the number of fully destroyed buildings, with 1,658 buildings, followed by the city of Bint Jbeil with 1,076 buildings.

In the Marjeyoun district, 969 buildings were destroyed in Mays al-Jabal and 824 in Taybeh, while the number of fully destroyed buildings reached 370 in Burj al-Shemali and 216 in Naqoura, both in the Tyre district.

The report noted that these figures reflect the scale of damage as of April 29, 2026. The assessment was also limited to buildings and did not include damage to vital infrastructure such as roads, electricity, water, and telecommunications networks, or underground facilities.

The assessment covered areas south of the Litani River, including the districts of Bint Jbeil, Marjeyoun, Nabatieh, Tyre, and Saida, as a follow-up to a previous study covering Beirut and Mount Lebanon.
