Leap day 2024 - May or so, return to Santa Fe, another homecoming. I thought February 29th was a fun date to have a plane ticket for, so on that day I returned to my previous home in New Mexico before all the travel with a few main goals: reduce my storage space by at least half, return to my old job to make some money if possible, leave again. I pretty much continued living the way I had for the past year, relying on the kindness of people I knew/met to have places to stay/make things work. My first week back happened to be exactly when an old friend (one of very few) needed a cat sitter. My old bosses and friends from my restaurant job, Cafecito, very kindly took me in for a while and I got to feel like part of their family again. I felt really blessed with beautiful places to stay and deeply enjoyed the peace of having my own space and some of my own objects again. They also lent me an old work van to drive around for a while, which I was fond of in a really silly way. I did in fact return to my old job as well, serving tables for breakfast and lunch, started making new friends in the new staff. It was very complicated and surreal at first, returning to this city I’d come to years ago to follow a boyfriend and have him not be there, have none of my old co-workers there, to have so much of what had felt like home to me be changed - but there were familiar parts too. It was comforting and beautiful to be back in the high desert, a place I appreciated more now having been gone, and I settled in over those few months. Found new favorite places and ways to feel home here again. By May I hadn’t made enough money to leave, and truthfully had been very distracted.. I tried to pivot and make plans to leave in the fall, while still finding places to stay etc not really willing to put down roots again yet.
