A little insight to our on-site group chat.

Top case- Shoulder pain case that was driven by a concussion during a car accident 2 years ago now progressing with pain-free high intent throwing. Huge wins/milestones.

Bottom case - MiLB position player
Overall very healthy and moves great.
Some trunk stability and vestibular work that we can do to clear the hip and vestibular function to add some strength and power too.

Active vs. Passive Shoulder External Rotation (ER), and why your ELBOW cares

In this video, I’m demonstrating the difference between active and passive shoulder ER.

PASSIVE ER is how far your shoulder rotates back when someone else moves it for you. It shows what the joint itself allows: the capsule, ligaments, and bone structure.

ACTIVE ER is how far you can rotate it back on your own, using your own muscles and coordination. It shows how much of that range you actually own and can control.

This matters for a few reasons for throwers:
Over years of throwing, most throwers gain extra ER in their throwing arm, as a positive adaptation. That “layback” helps create velocity. But having range and controlling range are two very different things.

A big gap between active and passive ER means the arm can reach positions during the throw that the muscles can’t control.

Limited passive ER means the arm can’t get to the layback position it needs.

Here’s why your ELBOW cares:

At max layback, the inside of the elbow is under huge stress as it’s pulled open. The UCL and the forearm muscles work hard to hold it together.

If the shoulder can’t provide that rotation, or can’t control it, the body still needs that motion to complete the task, and the force has to go somewhere. Often the elbow is next in line. Research in pitchers has linked deficits in shoulder ER with a higher risk of elbow injury.

That’s why when a thrower comes in with inside elbow pain, we don’t just look at the elbow. We check shoulder motion, both active and passive, along with the scapula, cervical/thoracic spine, hips, then throwing mechanics.

This post is for education, not diagnosis. If you have arm pain, see a qualified provider.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Owls Nest last Saturday for our pop-up show! And a huge thank you to everyone who helped put our little piece of history together- it was the first time the Owls Nest has hosted live music since 2015! We have some more shows lined up this fall, so stay tuned to our page for announcements; and in the meantime go catch a @quade_gannon show and stream some of his tunes wherever you listen to music!

What took place in Felton this weekend was nothing short of magic. Getting to play somewhere with as much history as the owls nest, in front of so many friends and family, is an opportunity I won’t forget any time soon. #badguyswinagain
